Title: Under Cowl Panel Paint
Post by: sdkar on April 20, 2011, 10:56:52 PM
I was looking through ebay at the latest Camaro offerings and found a photo of a very rough 69 Indy Pace Car.  The seller claims the car had not been driven since 1975 and may still have the original paint.  One of the photos shows under the cowl panel area where you can see through the grilled area painted the color of the stripes.  If I am correct, this is NOT a factory procedure and must have been done by the owner after purchase.  Is this correct?  Also, are the stripes correct for an original paint car?  If it is original paint, it is a nice source to see just how the stripes were laid out and done and where they stopped and started.

Here is the listing link:

GMs panting specifications called for the area below the cowl to be blacked out after painting the cowl area but in practice it was practically never done.  I have never seen a factory painted pacecar with anything but orange overspray down in the under cowl area.  That car is consistant with how Norwood painted Z11, and or Z28 stripes.

Me , I'm just freakin amazed tht the bidding went to $9600 for that rusty pile of headaches.  The vin should be put in the data base as 'scrapped'!!

Under the cowl area should be orange "overspray". I dont think that looks right.Looks like someone taped the orange with those straight lines.

Top of the cowl area was masked with either hand held masks, or taped off depending on which plant was building the car.  LA built cars had a larger stripe color area on top of the cowl, sometimes extending all the way to th top of the firewall. What you see in those pictures is exactly what Norwood did on all Z11, Z10 and Z28 stripes.

Well they must have used "hand held masks" on mine. Thanks for the pics!

I agree that's one example of the masking technique used. My 69 Z is more fogged in on the front and side edges.

So, is the under cowl painted area a factory job or was it done afterwards?  Whoever did it obviously had the wiper assemby out of the car as there is no paint on the rod or on the assembly pieces that the wiper arms attach to.  My pace car had the orange fogged in over the white, which I am  guessing the most common.

It was a factory job. My '67 NOR Z-28 was done pretty much identically.

That remindes me of a 69 Z11 that had been sitting off south coors road in the mesa ,all by itself. That was in 1976.You know the area Marty.Actually it was in better shape than that last pic.

Sonet, Is that a Norwood car? Most I seen are like mine fogged in. It's a Norwood 2D car. Maybe the black was masked off?

Mike

Yep.....it's a Norwood.  Sure looks like a tape masking job to me.  On the passenger side you can see some underspray of the cowl black paint underneath the masking tape line.

No offense taken, however to answer your question, the only picture in this sequence which does not have original paint as shipped FROM NORWOOD is the last one.
The First Picture is of a 45k mile Vintage Legend Certified 90% original paint unrestored Camaro. Cam was bad so this was taken when we had the engine out for building.

The Lemans Blue car with full cowl spray is an Early 1969 Norwood (10D 1968) the Black car is an 04C Norwood.

So a white car would not get any cowl spray other than the black under hood paint?

Does anyone else see Blue on that firewall... like the blue dash paint was sprayed before the white or the black?
