Title: Looking for 9N606612
Post by: TooManyReels on March 25, 2011, 12:19:47 AM
I have been given a challenge to see if I can find the where abouts of a 1969 Z/28 motor. Wow !!! What a challenge..With the knowledge of this site someone must know the where abouts of this motor...The motor was removed from the car many years ago. It could be stored in someones garage, in a car or even in the cast iron gave yard..A starting point would be that the car was originally from York Pa and the motor was removed while the car was still in the York PA area the best we know...If you know the where abouts of this motor from an 02D please chime in...

When did he sell it to you? The Post Office will forward mail for a year if a change of address was provided. Don't know if they will share the forwarded address, or even keep it after the year is up.

Here are some tips to help you locate the previous owners.  First since you know where the guy lived, his name and when you bought the car there should be some kind of motor vehicle tax record. These are usually at town hall and are public information...  However, not every state or town operates the same but it is worth looking into... Also the town may have the guys new address for tax reasons...  gotta love those taxes... (sarcastically speaking) but at least they may provide some good.

Also don't forget to check the phone book and on line name look ups...try using several some are good and others are not and you  may get enough info to know where to find the guy.  Good luck.

For those of you living in Connecticut you may want to go to your town A.S.A.P.  !!!!!    :o

Be polite and ask to see the past motor vehicle tax records.  Then using a digital camera photograph the tax records.  Why??? The state passed some kind of law where the towns can now dispose of the old tax records after 10 years or something like that... if you get to them before they are destroyed and lost forever you can see the cars VIN, address and name of the owner and how much tax, etc... this is a paper trail to locate the previous owners and cars history,...  I was able to locate my Camaro's original owners name this way and eventually found him.

It helps if you have a starting point or know which town the car owners lived in... but usually most cars didn't travel to far from the starting point, so you may need to visit surrounding towns etc...   GI JOE

So here's the story...

Car # 1 9N606612 was originally sold in the York PA. area many years ago and the current owner of car # 1 bought it without a motor...The owner looked for the original motor but to no avail..

Car # 2 9N606512 was originally sold in Lenoir NC and was sold to the third owner in 2008 without a motor as well..However, the motor for car 2 was posted and sold on e-bay. The motor from car # 2 was bought by car # 1 owner since it was built during the same week as car # 2..

In my communication to the owner of car # 1 he said that he did not want to sell the motor which is now in car # 1. The challenge to me was, if you can find the original motor 9N606612 then car owner # 1would consider trading motor 9N606512 so both cars would have the correct match # motors ...I am now the fourth owner of car # 2. So I'm thinking with the internet and sites like this one lets see where this gets me...

Both cars 1 and 2 are restored cars but what a story it would be if both the original motors could be returned to the correct vehicle.
I hope this helps to clear up this story somewhat and what I'm trying to accomplish ....

Thanks for your responses to my gripes/sarcasm (and taking over the thread).

Here are my issues:
I bought it in 1983!
I live in CA!
I have used online phone books to get a number of addresses.  With 30 letters sent out of 90 I have written down (spreadsheet), no luck.  Though, I have been offered beers if I ever show up in a few of the wrong addressee's towns!  And that is only the first 90 people of that name listed on those sites.  :-(
I've gone the DMV route (dang CA).  What a great break to see my own name 4 or 5 times in their records...
I haven't gone the town hall route.  I'd have to figure out where that town hall is, if it exists... lol

Bonuses:
1968 model
No TT
Non-original drive train
Met at least 2 previous owners, other than the guy I bought it from, in my area in the first couple years I owned it.  But I was 18 and didn't really care.  Kind of freaked me out, actually...  So, to get to the original owner, I'd have to find at least 3 people through the other's memories!!!

I try not to think about it too much.  I'm just going to (re)build my car the way I think I should be...  If I luck out, I luck out.

Good luck in your search. I hope you find your car.. I know my search is like looking for a needle dropped in the middle of the Atlantic ocean...But one thing I can say about classic cars, is that you do meet a lot of nice people...Yes, I have encountered a few jerks along the way (heck I might even be one of them to some people) but all in all the folks that work to restore cars can be the most helpful people when you really need help in finding something...

This site has already been helpful in finding 9N606512..I never thought I would have found this motor when I started looking at the car I just bought. But guess what, I did and it was here on CRG.
