Title: 1968 rally sport
Post by: clean68rs on March 15, 2011, 10:06:39 PM
I have a 1968 rally sport that I will be painting a custom brandywine. This is not a matching numbers car. The car origanaly came with a 327 and a two speed trany witch I never had. I now have a 350 engine and a turbo 400 trany in this car. My question is could this car have been ordered this way by a customer if thay wanted to ?  Also another question , on the 1967 v8 cars there was the v flag fender emblem if a customer wanted these emblems on there 1968 rally sport could they order them special ? I realy like those emblems and was considering puting them on my car. Thank you for any information you could find.

No, not from the factory, on both accounts.

It's your car do with as you want.  There's a 67 Camaro with a 327, SS emblems, cowl hood, spoilers, and rally stripes that beats me in most of the local shows.

When I bought my '68 in '83 it had 427 turbo jet V flag emblems on front fenders... ;-)  But I will be replacing with NOS 396 emblems.

Hello again with my 68 rs being painted in custom color I will still be putting on the stock front bumbel bee stripe up front. Im going to put the 350 emblems on the front of the fenders with the rally sport on on the side wear thay shoud be. After reading your responceses I think I will go with the v flags. What are some of your views on gost flames.

It is your car to do with what you want especially when doing custom work. Something to think about is that if you might sell it sometime down the road you need to consider what a possible buyer would want also. Ghost flames look good if done correctly, but 99% of the people out there would prefer a stock stripe over them or no stripes at all. What is popular today will probably be obsolete in a year or two anyways. I have a friend that built a beautiful 69 convertible that went the custom route a couple years ago, and the car has won many awards at some major "open" shows in the northwest. Now that he wants to sell the car he is having a hard time moving it due to his modifications. Mainly his tastes are out of style and it would take $15k - $20k k to get the car to where it needs to be. It would cost him more to fix his "tastes" than what he would get out of the car. It is a $50k car if it had been done without his modifications, but now it is a $30k car tops. Funny thing is that he painted it HOK Brandywine over Galaxy Grey base leaving the stripes the grey color. Paint is flawless but that custom color is just not right on a convertible. Good luck with your build and post pictures when you are done...................RatPack.......................

My car doesn't stand a chance at local car shows. (and I really don't care) It just a very real  69 Z with pretty much all original drive train, interior and even the 42 year old white vinyl top, showing 96K miles. But it's not all detailed out, perfect paint, etc. It's pretty much just a well cared for old car. There's always a 69 COPO 427 Camaro at every car show anymore anyway. (Right!) Who can compete with those?

Clean68rs,

Some day I would like to purchase a car like yours {non-#'s} and build it for use as a daily driver. Unfortunately money is tight right now and this will probably never happen. If this is your goal then you are certainly approaching your build the correct way. However, Rat Pac brought up an important point...if your goal is for competition or resale you would be much better off spending a little more money on a numbers matching car. Mild or Highly Modified cars are all about deep pockets and the rewards are short lived. Worst of which...you will never see a return on your investment and you will undoubtedly take a huge hit. I too have many friends who have decided to go the modified route only to find themselves spending more and more money just to keep up. When you consider the example RP gave...would you rather put a minimum of 20K into a mod or into a numbers car? Ultimately it is your choice...this is only one guys opinion.

Welcome to this site and good luck with your car.

Thanks everyone for your replys. I know this car is no baret jackson car nor do I want it to be. Im building it to that early 70s street strip look I remember in my early teens. Im a little past midlife crisis and this is my hobby. And so far my son is on board with my ideas. Im droping the gost stripe idea. I realy appreciate others views and opinions. Thanks again.

Need  Help fuel gage goes all the way to full when I turn the key to on. This is a complet body off build. At first it worked ok now this has come up. I pulled the conection in the trunk and jumped it from the power lead with a test light and it comes on dimly but also at the same time the gage goes back down. When I disconect the test light it goes back up what am i missing here? Tank you for any help you can give.

Is this with console or dash fuel gauge?  Usually a ground issue, with console make sure the pods are grounded and so is the console.  With the dash one, you ahve to have a good ground strap and/or wire.

I have a in dash gage. I have cleaned the ground in the trunk and on the sender unit. I will look for any dash ground and elsewhere thank you for your help.I will be back on it today. I will post results.

Simple test to do, just ground the tan sending unit wire coming from the dash but DO NOT use a test light, use a jumper wire, as you do not want a drop in the ohms going through the light. Turn the switch to ON, the gauge should peg past full. If it doesn't and drops, then the gauge is bad. If it pegs out past full then the sending unit is bad or has a bad ground. The 68 insturment cluster ground goes from the back of the cluster to the bright light indicator bulb housing then secures to the dash through the center screw in the top of the instrument carrier. See Section 12 Sheet B3 in the AIM for a picture of what this looks like and how it attaches................RatPack...............

Thank you Rat Pack I took the dash out today and foud that with the testing I did the gauge shot past full. I am going to do it again using the jump wire. I have a feeling its the sending unit. I think I pulled down the fuse block for nothing looking for shorts what a pain oh well. Tanks again.

Hello RatPack.  I did the jump wire test today. With the ignition on, the needle shoots all the way past full. That being the case it would indicate that the sending unit is bad. This is the strange thing. When I turn off the ignition and turn on the head light switch the needle comes all the way back past empty. What's up with that? Some other issue? Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like you have some ground issues and even maybe a bad printed circuit board.  I will shoot you an email later this evening. Right now I am going to go enjoy this 75 degree weather!.........RatPack............

Here are numbers I took off my 10 bolt rear end. I was wondering if you could tell me what they all mean. First  CON1  GM 62   3894859nf   pa 0102g2   970 writen on shaft.  Next  62  L157  The gear inside reads 2GM 3790629   12 37 I think the 1237 means the gear ratio not sure. Thanks for any info you can give me. Scott.

It should all be explained here, makes more sense if you read through it on your own:
http://www.camaros.org/drivetrain.shtml#axle

The 12 37 on the ring gear is the ratio - 37/12=3.08

Hello rat pack, I drilled holes for the side  rallysport emblems and installed the barrel clips only to find out that the studs on the moldings are not long enough to grab inside the clip. That being the issue I welded up the holes. Theirs no way I can get to the inside to put these on. I was thinking of grinding off the studs and trying some kind of spay adhesive on the back side of them and testing them on the primerd panel. Can you let me know how you have installed these on your past projects. Thanks  Scott.

I used 3m super 77 adhesive on the back side of the moldings and it is going to work out great. It certainly beats drilling holes in the fenders and it will hold fine.I did this test on a piece of sheet stock sanded and primed.
