Title: underhood wire harness extension
Post by: Ron C. on March 11, 2011, 08:56:08 PM
Coming off the fusebox I have on my 67 camaro a extension for the headlight harness that attaches to the fender under the hood hinge, it plugs into the fuse box outlet and then into the light harness and is about 6 inches long or so.I am trying to get a new one but nobody knows nothing about it.Anyone here have this on their car?

Brake differencial warning switch connection?  What color is it?  Do you have a picture? A tan wire would correct for the switch.

Yep. That's for the "differential pressure warning switch" located on the distribution block attached to the master cylinder.

I don't think he's talking about just the tan wire but the whole plug in set up.  I've never seen that, but I don't have much experience with all the variables.

We've talked about this ext before and no one seems to have an answer . Its not the head light harness its an ext for the engine harness. I've got one too. Have found two of them in LA cars . Head light harnesses don't have that brake switch wire in them only the engine harness has it

Ah, gotcha. No, I've never seen one like that either, but there were sooooo many dependancies for the harnesses that it's impossible to say. You'll probably just have to purchase a new engine wiring harness from one of the local repop houses.

well its just that the one in the pic is butcherd up so bad I would like a new one. There must be a reason for GM to have put that extension on there.I know its hard to get at once all the brake equipment is in place.I would have thought that factory fit would have this item they dont list it in the catalog.By the way I also have this on my norwood build 67 Z28 also so its not just the LA cars that have this and my other car isnt a RS so its not RS related either

Ah.  OK.  Very interesting...  I guess if you wanted to put one back in after buying a reproduction harness, one could buy the parts and do it themselves.  But that would involve cutting into a new harness or getting a bunch of wire.

I wonder how/why the tan wire isn't duplicated in the engine and extention harness.?.?  Meaning, if the extention was just added, there would be two tan wires.  Maybe THAT is why it was added???

Ah, the mysteries of this hobby!

UPDATE: I just talked to Don Donovan of factory fit and they now know what I was trying to describe to them. They do NOT list this in their catalog but they do have it and if anyone needs one give him a call. He said it only came on california built camaros with power brakes.I told him my norwood 67Z also had one so maybe its for cars with power disc or drum brakes.Anyhow they now know of the extension so they can get whoever needs one a extension. ;D

Checked my 11B LOS w/ PB and all original wiring today and it has the extension.  There's an additional tan brake switch wire on the extension.  I always thought this was a "normal" harness setup.

I wonder why or what was the reason for the extension? Maybe Jerry knows?

Ron,

That reason for that extension has never been figured out, that I know of. Did the Factory Fit people give you a part number for that extension harness. Would be nice to know that info.

Thanks,
-Jon

Hi Jon, no Don just said they did not list it but if you call him he will have the number for you.  I am thinking that the extension has something to do with assembly, maybe at the time the harness was added after the extension was installed and the brake booster and master and all the lines were installed it would be easyer to attach the engine harness to the extension rather than directly into the fuse box which would be hard to see and reach.I cant even get my hand down in there with everything in the way but if the extension was there it would be very easy to attach it to the engine harness. Just my opinion. ;D

I have one on my LA built 67 Camaro. They were an extension (as many have suggested). They were only used on LA built cars. It was to make it easy for the production line workers as they didn't need to lean over as far, one end was already plugged into the firewall. If you ask for Don Bock at Factory fit he might remember making one up for my 67 Pacer. Or send him your and he'll duplicate it. Correct the harness isn't needed but looks cool to those that look that hard.

Recieved the extension from factory fit,if anyone needs this extension the part number for factory fit is CA71392.

This was "supposed" to be an LA plant item only for cars with power brakes, but I have found it on two NOR cars with power brakes. The original GM part number is 6291392. I had talked to Tom at M&H back in the early 90's about this harness and he told me that cars with power brakes really need this to make routing the harness easier. He confirmed that GM showed it to be an LOS item only, but like me he has seen it on NOR built cars also, and all had power brakes....................RatPack.........................

Is this now, or was it originally a 6 cylinder car?

Well, going by the 67 AIM (UPC J50, sheet A4), it does say "Los Angeles plant only", but why wouldn't the Norwood plant need this as well???

I have this on my norwood 67Z28 also. Its not just a LA car thing.I am sure it a power disc/drum item that was needed to make it easyer to attach with the brake booster and master installed.

Mark, funny you asked about a 6-cylinder as it made me go to the garage and pull out an original harness from a 6cyl w/o power brakes and it has the extension. When I restored the car we converted it to a small block and I didn't use the extension during the restoration..................RatPack..................

The engine harness on a 6 cylinder needs to be longer to reach the distributor, coil  and possibly the oil pressure switch.
