Title: 1968 ss 350 air cleaner
Post by: x66 714 on March 07, 2011, 11:24:59 AM
Can somebody supply me with a picture of a known correct air cleaner for a 68 ss350?
What is different for manual & automatic transmission?
Thanks, Joe

hey Charley
Thanks. Great pictures. That snout must be a foot long. Flat on the flange? Your pictures also gave me a good view of a smog adj bracket I need to find....Joe

Th automatic ss350 cleaner had a heat stove and pipe directed to the exhaust manifold that started at the snorkel. Do a search on here and you will see other discussions with pics of an Auto setup. If you can't find it I can post them. Just need to find them.

Cheers,
John

Charley sent me an e-mail with measurements. He said the snout is 10.5 inches & the air cleaner diameter is 15 inches. The pictures make it look like it's longer. A better picture of the decal would be nice also...Joe

Yup, and the broadcast code is probably CO (the C is missing).

Looks like it also came off once or slipped over.

If you look at the other pics it looks like the smog hose has pushed it up over time.

Is the hose running from the cleaner side to the crank case the original setup? What markings are on that hose? As I understand it, the 69 switched over to a steel line. I have a 68 and was missing this hose. Were spring clamps used on this?

Thanks for the help. Joe - Did you still need the auto setup images?

I'm good with what was posted. I need to look for one for a standard trans. The information posted here is excellent. I have a swap meet in Phx on the 19th so I'll take all these pictures & notes & cross my fingers. Thanks everybody.....Joe

Joe, the smog pump adjuster brace for 67 and 68 are very similar. The bend in the brace (see Charley's photo) is close to the adjusting slot on the 67 and the 68 is about 2.5" from the slot. I have several 67's but only my reference 68. I'll keep an eye open for one if I go to swap meets. I can take some photos of the braces if you're interested.
