Post by: muscle joe on February 20, 2011, 03:04:18 PM
I have a 6A Z28 VIN 654549, with those numbers in mind what YH wheels would be more correct, 4-18 date coded or 5-20  Coded  Thanks  Joe

The May 20th wheels are too late - the April 18th wheels would work.

Question - In a different thread it was referenced that all 06 cars were 06As. I toke it to mean that all the cars built in June carried the 06A date code although they may have been built later in the month. Was this a possibility and if so then would the later wheels be possible?

I think this is where your VIN would come into play so you could date your car a little closer to actual build date.

Another YH rally question: were the backs of the wheels painted black on the early wheels and then like a flat grey later on? I have two MAY wheels that are black on the back side, and two August rallys that are like a gloss grey on the back.

Production-line wheels were received in raw, oiled steel, then dip-primed black and the outer face was painted argent silver. Service wheels were shipped from Kelsey-Hayes already painted gray all over (so they wouldn't rust in warehouse storage).

would service wheels be what you received if you ordered them over the counter? for say like an extra set for snow tires?

I took another look at my wheels today and must have mixed them up in my previous post, my two wheels with the black on the back side are dated 8-4 is this ok for a 08C car? I guess I should check my spare and see what date it has.

Yes - those dates are fine for your car.

thank you for the response. does it seem to perfect to have a matched set of 5 all dated the same? when they produced the wheels and installed them on cars would a car have had 2 or 3 different date coded wheels?

It's my understanding that the YH rims were batch made. Meaning that one or maybe two days a month they produced the YH rims. The dates I've seen are usually the same for each month. So if that was the case it wouldn't be unusual to have 5 dated the same.

If it is true that the YH wheels were batch made does anyone know what the dates should be for YH wheels made in Jan., 1969, and what dates would be appropriate for an 01C built Z?  Thank you.
