Title: Long Water Pump on 396 in '67 Camaro?
Post by: 67SS396 on May 20, 2006, 04:37:43 AM
We have a factory BB 67 SS.
The original big block is long gone.
We have purchased a 402 BB out of a 71? Camaro that came with all the pulleys and brackets that is a long water pump style.

Any ideas if a long water pump setup on a big block will work in a 67 Camaro?

Sure would be nice as would save us $ having to buy all short water pump stuff.

Thanks.

You'd have to change EVERYTHING in front of the harmonic balancer  :o The long water pump came out in '69, which means all the original pulleys, brackets and accesssory mounts will have to be changed. The alternator will be moved to the right side of the engine and that means major rewiring. You'd also have to change the fan shroud and fan spacer or fan. Do it right and get the short pump stuff  ;). For my part, nothing is uglier than a '67-'68 Camaro engine compartment with '69 accesssory drives. No slam on '69s  ::) Keep 'em original  :).

It will work.
You might have to play with the fan spacer, or clutch a bit to make everything fit under the shroud properly. But like HR68 said - It really won't be right.

Well we are gonna see about getting short water pump brackets for the power steering and alternator.
Just really depends on how difficult it will be to find the right stuff.
One thought is we have all the long pump stuff but if we can find the short pump stuff we go with that.
