Title: 69' Z/28 Fake Cowl Tag ???
Post by: dannystarr on February 12, 2011, 08:56:20 PM
This tag doesn't look correct. The letter's and number's have different texture and embossment. Weird......Also why is the "O" On Norwood crunched-in like that on the right side ? I have never seen an "O" Like that on NOR. It's on eBay and has a picture of the Protecto Plate and Build Sheet also. Plate looks right. What do you guys think?? .........Danny

Its real, theres a group of those tags  around VINs 560XXX to 561XXX with the scrunched together NOR lettering.  Not all of them in this range but some.

WOW, I gotta say I had yet to see a tag like this. I learned something new today. Even a blind squirrel finds an accorn ONCE in a while! Thanx, fun as always. And Paul, thanx for always posting the link. For some reason, I don't know how to get that to work. Oh well, where's that accorn again............ ::)

The car looks very nice and lots of original documentation.  Daytona yellow is such a nice colour with the deluxe interior and all the options.

L78 Steve, you are thinkjing exactly what I said when I first seen this car. How the hell can you have all that extra stuff and not get at least the 55 or even the U-17 package. If I owned this car the first thing I would do is add that. When I am looking to buy, if it doesn't have a console/gauge package, I skip it. That's just my thing......Danny

You have to remember that if you lived the era, and were a very dialed in and knowledgeable buyer, all of the hot rod magazines bashed the factory gauges stating to pass on them and add your own quality aftermarket gauges.  Therefore many owners added their own SW or Sun gauges which were much more accurate.

I guess it's a personal like or dislike.  My car has the guages but they were added buy a PO.  I don't like them. With a Z28 the gas doesn't go very far and that little gas gauge is a guess.  Also it kind of rattles and takes away from the Z28 image to me.  This is only my opinion and I'm not trying to say what other should like.  I just don't really like them in my car and I'm putting it back to the way it came, idiot lights.

Most of the people who I knew that bought new Z28's or L78's did not order factory gauges.  Such is the case with my Chevelle too.  I did not order the car but who ever did knew what they were doing.  L78-89, M22 trans, 4.10 rear, bench seat and chambered exhaust.

That's just they way it was back in the day.  One of my best high school friends ordered a new Nova SS L78 when we were seniors.  Got everything but factory gauges.  Again, if you lived the day back then, ordered a solid lifter Camaro, Chevelle, Nova, etc, you did NOT order factory gauges.  They may look nice in today's world of restoration but they did not get the job done back in 1969 when the cars were new.  The temp gauge is what we called the mystery gauge.  There are gaps in the numbers so you really never know what the temp is.........
