Title: Who sells the correct '69 Z air cleaner decals?
Post by: Dave69x33 on February 01, 2011, 02:19:45 AM
Can anyone direct me to who sells the correct air cleaner decal for a '69 Z28?  I need to replace my decal and cannot find the correct decal with "PRINTED IN USA" in the lower RH corner.  The pictures attached are from a survivor Z28 with the orignal decal still attached, showing the correct typeface.

Thanks!

Don't know for certain but I just ordered two...one from Heart Beat City and the other from Old Muscle Cars. Hopefully one of these will work...

The second problem is the repro's are not foil over heavy buff/manilla paper backing, they are foil only.

There is a company who will make the correct decal IF (you have an original they can scan or can take some high quality photos with a ruler laid beside the decal).
If you can get the correct one made please advise as I am sure there is pent up demand if the correct one is not currently available.

Most of the repo's will start peeling(curling) up after awhile...  :(

77thor,

That is exactly my problem.  The upper corners are starting to peel up.  I restored my car in 1995 - 2000 and several of my decals need to be freshened up and changed, but I cannot find correct decals now.

Attached is my repro decal which has the "PRINTED IN USA" in the lower RH corner, but the typeface is slightly different and not as well defined as the original.

Speaking of decals, one other correct decal I need is the #3934894 "BM" code rear leaf spring decal tag (for '69 with multi-leaf springs).  Per Jerry MacNeish's book, the BM tag should be silver paper with black letters.  Today, I can only find yellow paper with black letters.  Again, back when I restored car, I purchased the correct silver paper tags from Rick's 1st Gen, before it was sold to Ecklers.

This makes me wonder why we do not find correct decals today, with better technology to make them.  Decent repros were available at one time...go figure.

Update...Just received breather decals from both Heartbeat City & Classic Muscle. Both are identical & neither has "Printed IN USA" @ lower right corner. I will use the one from Heartbeat City simply because it has less scuff marks & is centered much better than CM's.

I also received emissions decals & both are similar & both have "Printed in USA". The font is slightly different... CM uses a bolder print. Again...I think I'll go with HC's version.

If anyone knows of a company that sells the breather decals w/Printed IN USA, please let us know...

I saw a sticker on Firewheel Classics website that seemed to have the "Printed in USA" text. Here's their reply when I asked about it.

Quote from: Merri Jordan at Firewheel Classics
ours have the "printed in USA" on the sticker. The decal part number is :  DC-03 and it is $3.50.  Let me know if you want to place an order.
Thanks!

I have not seen their sticker myself so I can't say anything about quality, fonts etc but this one at least seems to have the text that others don't have.

FinnRS,

Thanks for that info.

For $3.50, I may order one and check it against the original that I have a picture of.  If need be, I can visit the friend who owns the '69 Z with the original decal still intact, and compare the decals side-by-side, photo document them, and then share the info on CRG.

I don't know how many different decal printers/suppliers there are in the market today, but if we (collective group of Camaro hobbyist) can identify several printers who are doing correct work, we need to support these printers/suppliers.

The same would apply to any and all decals we need for our restorations.  There are probably many good printers on the market but they need accurate detail samples to reference from.

Just received the decals from Firewheel Classics, and just like you said, printed in the USA is on them. I still have to say that I like the decal from Heartbeat City because the quality is so much better. Something about the printing methods used by FC just doesn't sit well with me. It is much duller in quality and doesn't pop like HC's...for whatever its worth...

Thanks for the link, time to order some missing decals for my car..

There's just one thing I'm wondering; are the decals on ECS' website correct for the cars they list them on their website? Heartbeat City, for example, list the "YC" front coil spring decals for a '67 SS350, whereas ECS lists the same decal for a '68 small block. Also, ECS lists different letters for '67 SS350 than Heartbeat City.

http://www.ecsautomotive.com/productdesc.php?co=g&id=5

Is the "YC" decal correct for my '68 small block? I've never just seen any other supplier sell decals for my setup. Does anybody have info on this?

I do not believe they are very knowledgeable about GM's however if you have an original they will make, and then offer it, otherwise you would have to know your codes and hope they or someone else makes a correct version.

During the restoration of my 68 L30/M20 I ordered supposedly "correct" tire pressure and emissions decals.  The tire pressure decal didn't even have the correct code for my car, and nobody had it available.  The emissions decal I received had the correct part number on it but it was much different than my original.  I sent both decals to Jim Osborn Reproductions and they were reproduced as perfectly as possible on the correct types of backing.  They didn't even charge me since I gave them the "rights" to offer them as a product.  To this day, I still haven't seen the parts suppliers offering them - go figure.

There's a guy in Canada, Don Lightfoot, that custom makes decals as a hobby for anyone that needs a decal not being reproduced or want a more accurate reproduction than what is on the market.  His e-mail address is: don48@personainternet.com and website is: http://www.angelfire.com/rock/69ss/decals01.html.

I'm resurrecting this thread to see if there was/is progress on the correct air cleaner decal for the 302 with Made in USA printed on it. The last couple I  bought from Ricks in 2000 was just foil and the ends have curled up. Are these still the same as back then?

I just found the correct decal for the 302 with the Made in USA in the lower left corner. Bow Tie Muscle Parts and Accessories on e bay. I do not know how to link the e bay site to the forum or I would have posted it. Anyone knows how to post from e bay please let me know how  to do it. It sells for $6.99.. Thanks, Scoop

I think these Air Cleaner decals have come a long way in the past few years.  I'm sure you have to be careful, 'cause there's probably still some of the older/cheaper plain foil ones out there.  This is where I got mine;
https://www.drclassic.com/catalog/Camaro/Decal/D00033.html
Looks pretty darn close to original to me.  Has the lighter (thinner) foil on some kind of paper, and the PRINTED IN USA on the lower right corner.  I've seen them @ Rick's (now managed by Ecklers) also.

Update: Just received the correct "BM" code rear leaf spring decals for a '69 Z28 from ECS Automotive Concepts, www.escautomotive.com, 636-536-2221, with the silver background and black lettering.

Related question:  Where on the leaf spring was this decal originally placed?  I placed the last decal set I had just behind the front eyelet but the ECS website recommends they be located 16" - 18" down from the rear eyelet.  Can anyone confirm the location or locations considered common and correct for the decal?  Eaton Detroit Sping, Inc., one of the original OEMs to GM for leaf and coil springs, may be a resouce I'll also check for info on decal placement.

P.s. ESC's Rust Prevention Magic (RPM) product works great!

Eaton Detroit Spring was never an OEM spring supplier to GM or anyone else, but Mike (Eaton) has most of the original spring drawings, and they should show the location of the ID sticker.

Dave you may want to check out Dannystarr's thread from earlier this year  http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=12997.0  There hasn't been an update lately but it's in reference to the same.   I'd like to know also.  :)

Sorry for my miss info on Eaton Detroit Springs. Not sure where I got that info.  At least they have the prints to make springs.  Who made springs for GM?

BTW, I called them and the person I spoke with had no clue about the correct loc of the spring tags, or spring color codes. I asked about what the print specs required but did not get a supportive response.

JohnZ,
Do you have contacts at Eaton who would look up this print info?

Thanks

If Eaton-Detroit doesn't have the info, there's a restoration supplier who makes EXACT reproduction Camaro multi-leaf springs (whose name escapes me for the moment); I'm sure he has the info.
