Title: 69 Red Z/28 RS at the Forge.
Post by: 69z28302 on January 27, 2011, 05:37:14 PM
Was just looking through my February issue of Muscle Car Review (page 48) and saw this barn find Garnet Red 69 Z/28 RS. Does anybody have anymore info on this car? Where it came from how many miles . What a great find!

Can anyone fill me on the rear shocks? Are they original?

those rear shocks are not original. i had a pair of those on an indy pace car way back when. the spring was supposed to lift the rear if it had weak springs. didnt work!

I just got off another web site that has made negative and positive comments about my old rusty car. I sort of wish I had left it at home and took a big fancy nice car that every one has seen a thousand of. (not really)A lot of people enjoyed looking at the car at the FORGE SHOW and I am glad Tim asked me to bring it. I have a bunch of old muscle cars, but the red Z is the only car I have that I have been excited about in years. It is missing the original smog, shocks, and horns. Nothing else has ever been touched. Original plug wires, carb, dist.rad. fan, the list goes on and on. The man who had the car new put the smog and 2 of the original wheels in a corn crib on their farm and some one stole them. It was parked in 1975 but the engine will still crank over. I know it is a project, but I got GM sheet metal with the car when I purchased it so I will not need to hunt parts. My wife tells me if I find a pile of horse manure in a field and it has tires and rims around it I would try to buy and bring home. It is a sickness I have that I hope is never cured. Thanks , Robert Hurst Campton, Ky.

Robert, welcome to the site. You can't leave us hanging like this, we love these types of finds. Tells us more, How did you locate this car? Did it come with any original dealer documentation? Did you buy it from the original owner?

You are right, this is not something you would typically see at a car show in the current condition. It's also sad to think your car is being bashed on other web sites as someone in the know would certainly appreciate this sort of find. I hope you realize most posts generally are in fun and most of us really collect these cars as a hobby and not for profit.

I for one love the hunt more than anything else.

Welcome Robert, please take many photos if and when you decide to start a restoration... there is nothing like an original car, even if it needs a complete restoration... they are only original ONCE!

Well Robert I have that same sickness every since I found out that The # 57 ZL1 was sold at your hometown dealer some 20+ years ago. I always still hope to find a car like you have found in my search.

I just love looking at the survivor cars.  We older guys have to apolgize for those generally younger folks that tend to be negative about your car. It's a shame that this car looks to have been sitting outside. Had it been protected, It could litterly be cleaned up and left as is. It is kind of a shame to restore something that is a true icon of the 60's muscle era and has been a time capsule for 35 years. Thanks for sharing your car with us. Be sure to keep us posted and we dont care what those clowns at the other site said. I hate to admit to alliance  to some of those guys but I'm a member of that site also.

I personally think its an awesome car as many do, only you know the condition but if it was possible I would get it running, treat it to protect if possible and leave it as is. As mentioned its a time capsule and has a lot of preserved info.

You can restore one at any point you wish... it's more fun to find what made this car different from the next... that's one of the most interesting things to see, the differences from car to car.

Rick, Sold that old cap you sent for 30 bucks, gave the money to my mother-in-law, she wants a new pistol for some reason. Hung the shirt on the wall so I can brag about my old pal Rick. I do not understand the vacuum lines but the original owner assured me they have never been touched. Maybe a question for people who know a lot more than I.Thanks for the shirt and cap. Mike, I found the Datona yellow Z/L1 in a building in Walled Lake, Mi. The man who had the car did not realize it was what it was. I could not afford it at the time, so I filled him in on the history of the car. That at least got it back in the world. I have some friends who have the original engine in an old closed down gas station in Ky. Sits in the floor with a little dust on her. Came out of a dirt track car but thats another story. Like every one else, I love the hunt. I have found COPOs  in barns, 67 Z on a side street in Mount Sterling, Ky. A 65 A/FX hemi car in Hazard, ky.that had been stored since 1967. I have had a ball and we all need to realize that the greatest thing we get from our old cars are the new friends we make. I would like to thank  everyone out there in our hobby who helps keep the love alive for our old cars.Richard, Missed you at the Forge last year. Sure hope you show up with your old car in Sept.

It's too bad the engine isn't back with the yellow ZL1.

Rebuilt carb, changed oil and plugs, pre-lubed, filed points. Fired right up with 65 pounds oil pressure. Sure made my day. Happy in Ky.
