Title: 1969 Z28 distributor
Post by: wisemanz28 on January 24, 2011, 12:17:17 AM
My Z28 is a early Sept. 69 car, I was recently told my car did not get a 1111480 distributor, it is supposed to have a 2003 distributor. It was explained to me that because it was a late car that is why I have trouble finding a 480 dist. with a july or august date. Is this correct? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The only distributor that's in Jerry's book for a Z/28 is the 1111480.

There are many opinions on this.  What I will say is this and you can form your own opinion.  I document all distributors that come into us for restoration and rebuild.  We have done thousands over the years.  I have rebuilt original 480 distributors with a late date of 9H12, which is Aug 12, 1969.  It is my opinion that the 480 was used until the end of production.  One of the 1112003 distributors that shows up (and we've restored many is 9G11).  I think these were warranty replacements.  Many of the 9H12 480's have come out of cars built in Sept and Oct of 1969.

In the case of the 1968 Z28 1111467 dist.  There was a memo from GM to dealers stating that 1111266's will be used due to a surplus of them at the end of the model year.  To this day, there is no memo stating that a replacement 1112003 will be used for the late 1969 production Z28's.  And the fact that there are 480's made after the 003's were produced supports this theory.

Typically, the 266 can show up through Jan '68.  467's started about Jan 1968 but I now have two 7J 467's in my data base,

I've seen the 2003 distributors in late 69 Z's, with engines dated mid-Oct or later. I've not seen a 480 in one of those late cars.

A Sept Z would have a 480 for sure.

I have a 10E  Z  with 2003 dist, I was a little worried at first considering everything else on the car was original .  The block Date Is 10 16, I Will Have To Look Again For dist Date.
