Title: Water pump - wrong one?
Post by: my124677n on December 24, 2010, 10:25:31 PM
I have a 67 with an original 327.  I had a squeal from my alternator belt and noticed that the water pump pulley and alternator pulley dont match up (off set).  Does this water pump look original to the car, or was it for a diiferent sb chevy.  At one point the offset was almost 2 inches.  I was able to bang the bracket forward and now the off set is about 3/4 of an inch, but still causes some squealing from time to time. Any ideas???

its hard to tell from the pic. you do know that the alternator goes in front of yhe adjuster brkt ? get the part number off the pump.

I had the alternator behind the bracket.  I repositioned it this morning and it looks to be 99% aligned.  Thanks for the help.

the other thing to try is to make sure the spacer is behind the water pump pulley. easy to forget to put back on.

The water pump looks fine with short legs and close to the timing cover.
Water pump pulley to crank pulley alignment looks right too [hard to tell in the pic though] so I'd guess it's only an alternator position problem.
'Banging' the bracket forward sounds a bit harsh!  especially by the amount you quote :o
Post up a pic of the alternator and bracket.

btw, that's a head twisting pic - trying to separate the timing cover from the pump backing plate!!

Here are a couple of pictures from above...plus one of the car sitting in the garage.  As I mentioned earlier, the alternator was sitting behind the bracket, so I moved it up front and it does align better now.  I may just buy a replacement bracket from Rick's, etc. and replace it to see how it aligns. I recall they are only about $25 or so...

P.S., not to make you East coast guys jealous, but I was able to take the '67 out this weekend and enjoy the 60 degree So. California weather. it was a little nippy, but I guess I can live with it!

Doesn't look too bad, though there may be something wrong at the bottom bracket as well, as the whole alternator 'seems' to be skewed such that the pulley end is pointing inboard.
Perhaps the bottom bolt is undersize [diameter] or some bushes are missing.
It's mostly the bottom bracket that sets the alignment, so everything has to be a close fit there.
Beware of flex fans. I seem to recall a story of one ejecting a blade through a hood.

Nice ride btw!!  :)

also my124677n, the bolt goes in from back to front. looks like you have a bolt through the front.

Well spotted!! Must have a nut on the other end of the bolt  ???
