Title: Do these stamps and tag look ok
Post by: dannystarr on December 08, 2010, 08:26:56 PM
This car is for sale right down the road from me. My friend is interested. I think it's a restamp in more ways than one. Maybe the cowl tag is ok. I just wanna know yes or no on each. Don't have to tell me what's wrong with them. Unless ya want......Danny

The pad is obviously decked and restamped.

The vin by the oil filter looks restamped also.

Looks like the VIN and the engine stamp are way off.

Among other problems, sequence number is too high.

Its a late March 69 VIN with a late December Assembly stamp.  Not impossible but not likely either. Pad has rotary cutter marks or sanding marks on it, looks to have been decked.

Danny,

The term "Broach Marks" is brough up when a question like yours is asked. These are faint lines on the stamp pad parallel to the Crank. You can see them in this pic. Your pic is of a pad that has recently been decked. You can see the circular pattern of the grinding disc. My guess is the final pass with the disc was to knock down the burs and distortions caused by the re-stamp.

The other Red Flag...both your pics look like they've been re-stamped within the last few days.

Looks like 9N614244 in Danny's photo.

I merged the two topics together.
VIN is 9N614244.
Pad is -surprisingly- original. It looks like it was decked and someone tried to make the V clearer and just mucked it all up. You can see part of the original V under it.
Way late of a block for that car though and the VIN stamp looks wrong.

I just glanced at the tag and it seems OK. Body # is fine.

This was my first guess, but the V threw me. My initial thought was someone just wanted to clean up the deck so it didn't look like mine. Just don't understand why. ???
It also looks like someone restamped the VIN. Maybe for the same reasons. ???

Well guys I pretty much figured it was all restamped. I wonder if it even started out as a X33 Z/28. The cowl tag rivets look funny and sticking out to me. The pad stamp looked pretty good. Too bad they took a few thousandths off to clean it up. Sequence , VIN, it just all doesn't add up. Beautiful car though for 40K. Well off to New Orleans for my 50th. Over and out......Danny
