Title: Paint under Cowl Pannel - color Z11
Post by: srode on December 04, 2010, 05:36:34 PM
Ok, I did a search but didn't find exactly what I was looking for on the topic.  Z11 under the cowl panel where you can see through the vent, what color(s) are supposed to be where?  I understand the wiper linkage rods are flat black from other posts, but what about the well and the panel directly under the cowl - Orange, Dover White, or Flat Black.   The person restoring my car insistes its white with th well area flat black, I'm thinking it's all hugger orange.

Also, are the color(s) over spray or full paint?

thanks, Steve

The cowl was masked and the areas under the grilles painted orange. This was done after the car was painted so the remainder of the cowl top was white.

Nothing was flat black. The wiper linkage was probably flow-coated semi-gloss black.

Thanks William.  I'll have everything under the cowl painted orange so all you can see is orange when you look through the grill with the exception of the wiper arms.   Just out of curiosity, is this the same for all cars with stripes?  Example: Z28 with white stripes and body color lemans blue would be all white when you look through the cowl grill?

The quality and coverage of stripe color on the cowl varies.

Early Norwood cars were very sloppy. There is an original photo of a Novermber '68 built Z/28 on page 120 of JM's '69 book. White paint extends completely down the firewall. On later cars it is limited to the top of the cowl and eventually is confined to the areas under the grilles. Van Nuys is probably a bit different.

Just my color combination. White on top of the cowl. I read that down in the wiper arm recess was supposed to be painted black, but many were not.  I did mine black. This may only apply to Z/28 since that is what Mark was responding to

Thanks for the pictures, very helpful to see the spray pattern - This was for a black car with white stripes,  right?  Assume a Z28?

Seems like the black / white combo the lwer section is almost an overspray where the pace car its more uniform inside the lower cowl section - I'm guessing since there's not reall standard other than perhaps a maturing approach to masking off what wasn't painted as the cars move forward in time, you could expect to see quite a bit of varitatino from car to car.  I'll show the pictues to the shop doing my paint work, very helpful guys, much appreciated.

Yes black with white stripe X33.
The early cars had much more overspray on the cowls and down the firewall.
There is one in Jerry's book which has nearly a white firewall.
Here is a 10D being restored which has the correct replicated heavy overspray pattern.
