Sorry guys...can anyone tell me where to go on the main site to decode this starter? I'd like to know what everything means except for the obvious...

That's a 1985 Pontiac, Olds, Chevy, GMC, etc... starter used on several engines of that time period. Yours is dated February 19th, 1985.

In addition, can you please tell me what to look for or post a pic of an original starter for a '69 12A LOS car.
Maybe even a source?

1998557 is the part number. 5B19 is the date code (5=1985, B=February and 19=the 19th day). I'm not sure what the 4 is. John might be able to answer that one.
I don't have a picture of a 1969 starter, but what engine/transmission do you have?

Its a '69 L48 350ci/300HP w/TH-350 Tran.
Forget the 4 this thing is going in the trash.

SORRY ED...MY BAD!
Just remembered I had starter trouble a while back and some back yard mechanics switched parts from the '85 starter & this one to make one good one. Actually I thought it was pretty slick.
Anyway, here's the one I should have posted to begin with. It's a little hard to make out but this is what it has; 1109061 OH15 & DELCO REMY USA.

That's a Mercury Marine starter. Google it and you can find all your starter info.

The starter number. As in Delco parts number 1109061 Then mash search and it will pull several sites. You can look for the number and it will give the app.

These sites do not give very much information at all. In fact one site froze up my pc.
From the information Ed gave its a 1970, August 15 build. Not really sure where you come up with boat starter... :-\?

Not sure if that would still be listed, but here is the Delco Remy parts reference site:

If you cannot find a helpful site online, take it to your local auto parts store or Chevy dealer to see what their reference program says.... Sometimes it takes a little detective work.

I tried that site earlier and plugged in the part#...they do not have a record of it. As I recall, the donor starter was picked up at a parts store and was specked out for a 60's V8 small block, maybe 70's. As Ed pointed out...it was way off. The thing wouldn't fit so the guys had to switch parts to make one good one. The second pic above is of the starter that was in the car to begin with and it fit just fine. Still hope someone can post a pic of the correct one so I don't get hosed again.

Rebuilt starters from a parts store hardly ever show the "numbers" they were born with. Incoming cores are disassembled, common parts (like the armature case) are cleaned and binned, and are used as required to assemble rebuilts.There were only a few armature cases used for the zillions of applications, so the "numbers" could be from almost anything. Having the right numbers for any specific application is purely coincidental for a rebuilt starter.

As always your exactly right and now that I think of it this starter business isn't that big a deal. I should be able to find one with out too much trouble. I know of a lot of local car guys I can trust. I think I'll begin with them.
