Hi all,
Just wondering if there's any consensus on who makes the most 'accurate' [hue wise] chevy orange engine paint.
I've just tried some POR-15 and it looks pretty close [from old, dusty memory though :) ]. Others I've tried in the past looked a tad on the red side.
-
POR is orange, not Chevy orange. Advanced search: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=5268.0
-
Hi Sauron, not sure what you mean by that, they call it chevy orange, or is the hue to inaccurate - too orange??
-
I tried that POR and it looked pinkish and it didn't go on well at all. I took it all off. It seems there are a couple of favorites but I used Aervoe and it looks right on to me.
-
can't you still get it from gm in spray cans?
-
i just repainted the engine in my 67 rs/ss and used seymour. according to jerry m, it is the closest to orig. EN-48 is the color code. you can order online at www.seymourpaint.com. i sound like a commercial

That's extrodinary, how long ago did you try it? Was it rattle can or spray gun?
There's no pink cast in the stuff I got and it went on beautiful [spray gun] without filling in the casting.
Looks about the same hue as the cap on quanta's website, or the swatch on Aervoe's website

If only it was available in Au :(

Quanta (www.quantaproducts.com) also makes Chevy Orange that's an accurate hue and isn't quite as glossy as most of the others; very similar to Seymour Chevy Orange.
-
I believe the quanta paint is seymour and they use their owe quanta labels
-
Actually, I might be able to get the Seymour paint as they will ship internationally via fedex, who can carry this type of product.
At the moment though, their shipping/billing checkout isn't working properly so i'm still not sure of the shipping cost.

Yes, I've also noted the 'too glossy' with other products. My workaround with those was to allow 15 - 30 mins drying then mist spray to give a more satin finish.

Others have thought that as well - can anyone confirm?
-
You can't rely on color samples viewed on a monitor. Colors are not represented with accuracy. Quanta-Seymour correlation is in another thread on this site somewhere. Seymour/Quanta are the recommended choices for accuracy. Or have a jobber mix it on their system. But don't pour it on and fill the casting texture; and throw some flattening agent in it to knock the gloss back.
-
... and isn't quite as glossy as most of the others; ....
My most common observation about engine paint is it's glossier than original. I've seen take-off parts that have been stored for years and they are not full gloss.
And as noted above, it was a quickie paint job just to get color on the engine. It was not thick and it didn't fill in / smooth out the surface.
-
Is it recommended to use a base coat high temp primer or something similar to get a durable long lasting top coat?
Would the primer will tend to "fill-in" or soften the texture of the block and heads?
Rattle can paint tends to spray on thicker, correct?

No primer was used at the factory. I just clean the surface with lacquer thinner and shoot it.

Seymour #EN-48. That is the best in all the research I have done over the years. Quantra has this packaged in their can and charges you more money for the same product. Bottom of cans have the same codes. That's how we knew.

So far, Seymour have told me that they can't process international orders online and to contact Nancy at Seymour - still waiting a reply.
-
Ok, so Nancy replied and as expected it will cost a kings ransom to fly this stuff to Au. Wether I get one can or 6 cases it won't affect the freight cost very much.
JohnZ/Kurt, I notice in their pdf for engine enamels www.seymourpaint.com/hi_tech_engine_enamels.pdf (http://www.seymourpaint.com/hi_tech_engine_enamels.pdf) that they quote it as 'High Gloss'
Do you consider even Seymour's paint as being a bit on the glossy side compared to factory?

I haven't used the Seymour paint - I always use the Quanta paint, and it's right on.
-
Cheers John, would you rate the Quantra as semi-gloss?
-
Ryderfleetproducts.com carries the Seymour EN-48 (that's where I got mine). Their web page says they ship internationally. You might contact them and make sure.

No, it's a little glossier than that, but not the full gloss that most of the paints are that look like basecoat/clearcoat. The Quanta paint does very well in NCRS and Bloomington Gold Corvette judging; most of the others get deductions for "over-restoration".
-
I should also add that the Seymour EN-48 does very well in the "Legend Certification" at the Camaro Nationals.

Cheers guys, comments appreciated.
Have sent of an email to Ryder, though I'm not expecting the freight cost to be much different.
-
So is the concenses...both of these paints are the best choices?
Quanta Engine Paint (06-18)?

Here's what the Quanta Chevy Engine Orange (same paint as the Seymour) looks like on my '67 Corvette 327/300hp; good color, medium gloss - about as close to original as you'll find.
-
Thanks John...I now know what everyone means when they say too much red pigment in some engine paints...looks like an engine pull is on my next to do list. This should be fun... :-\

I know there are a few threads on this same topic but they seem to be scattered & hard to trace. Does anyone have detailed pics of a completed small block (350) they would care to share? I am looking for detail on what should and shouldn't be painted.
Thanks in advance.
-
Strip it down to the complete block with pan, harmonic balance er and valve covers on. No fuel pump or mount plate, manifolds, carb, pulleys, alternator, smog pumpor, A/C mounting brackets, motor mounts, hose barbs or sending units.

Thanks for the info Daniel & thanks for the links. There are some useful pics (over-spray etc). I'll start pasting these into a file for future reference.

Check out this link for Lucas Restoration as they present some photos of a 350 engine that has been restored....there are a lot of photos but look through them until you reach the engine and front subframe section.

The photo of the engine in this quote is not quite the original paint job....this is actually a photo of the engine showing a quick and dirty paint job using a rattle can and I think the the engine was even in the car at the time of the painting. This photo was taken before the restoration and during the tear down phase.
-
Jerry,
This is exactly the detail I was looking for. Thanks for the Lucas link!

Marty,
Why don't you look at this link..... https://picasaweb.google.com/LucasRestorations (https://picasaweb.google.com/LucasRestorations)
It is the menu of the gallery of photos by Lucas Restoration showing numerous cars that they have restored or currently in the process of restoring. The car that I am currently taking these photos from is the one entitled Keith's RS/SS. There are 5 albums on this car and look at them all to see the before and after photos.
Very good work that these guys do and the photos do show that.
BTW....I'm sure that the engine and sub frame work was done by Jerry Mc...he usually this work for them.
-
I looked at lucas's site before and to say I was impressed with their work would be an understatement. Thanks for jogging my memory!
-
Yeah, I looked for hours for the post I had from them when I was looking for the right motor mounts for my car. Someone had one where the mounts had been painted like that and I couldn't find it. I thought maybe that was it until I looked again and realized that paint job was not a resto.
