Post by: 1968RSZ28 on September 15, 2010, 09:36:33 PM
Does the attached engine assembly stamp look OK?

 ???

IMHO, it looks suspicious. The "2" is a different font than the attached pic shows.  Maybe JM could weigh in. Does the block casting date line up? ( I hope the pic uploads.)

Stamps are changed every day, you can't compare one to another unless you have one dated the same as the one in question.  I have an 0421DZ and the V041 and Z are the same as this one, but the D is different.  Can't make a definative call, but i would lean towards it being a good stamp.

So different characters were used on different days?  Was this also the practice at Tonawanda?

Comparing to other stamps, this one is real.

Yes. New gang holders were set up every day for every suffix scheduled for production that day prior to the start of 1st shift, and the individual character dies were purchased from at least three different suppliers, each of which had slightly different font styles; all were thrown in the same bin, and nobody paid any attention to which one was used. Unless you have two engines both stamped on the same day, you can't compare fonts.

Thanks everyone!  My concern was with the "D" (as Mark pointed out) and with the space between the "D" & "Z".

Now that the stamp is legit, I was going to post the information in the "Orphans" section, but the posted partial VIN is way off.   CRG, should I post it as 9N63793X, 9Nx3793x, or something else?

Yes, the block casting date is C 27 9.

9N63793x fits pretty well. Of course, you don't know if the missing digit is at the end.... :)

Good point.  I'll just post what the seller states in the above listing...

"Up for auction is a DZ 302 engine block , it has been hot tanked , cleaned, pressure tested and magnufluxed, it is a good block,  it is 4.060 bore but there is not much there for ring ridge , my engine builder said it can be honed and ran with 60 over pistons or you can order a custom set of 65 over and bore it out 5 thousands more,  it has a casting date of C 27 9 ( april 27 1969 ) a casting number of 3956618 , it has a vin # stamped by the oil filter but is very hard to read, 19N3793, if your looking for an original block for your 69 Z/28 and not scared to go 60 over this will work , i will ship,  it will be a flat fee of 200.00 anywhere in the lower 48 us states , or your welcome to come pick it up in person. any question you can e-mail me or call 763-245-0134"

Both stamps are fine.  I have others on the same date that are identical.  Sorry for the delay.

C 27 9 is March 27 1969 not April

Correct, the seller made a mistake in the listing.  March 27th is the date the block was cast, April 25th is the date the engine was assembled.

If you look at the bid history, did sassygrass320 bid himself up to $2,500?

Yes, probably to meet the reserve.
