Title: resonators
Post by: babaron on September 10, 2010, 12:18:28 AM
I'm getting a crossflow muffler installed on my '69 L78 tomorrow am and was wondering if anyone has any experience with resonators. They are on there now (w/o the muffler) and I need to decide if I am to leave them on or remove them. I belie ???ve either way would be correct for a 5E build.  I think it's too loud now but would like to keep a low rumble with the muffler.  Any thoughts?

Lots of mis-info on resonators.

They were used in production on dual exhaust Camaros starting on Day One, 1966. When Chevy had to quickly drop chambered exhaust as standard equipment on Z/28, L34 & L78 Camaros there weren't enough in the pipeline. So for a short time SOME cars were built with a single muffler only; some did get resonators. The under chassis photos of the 02D built #3 ZL-1 show it was built with them. By 05E all standard dual exhaust cars had them.

We did the #4 ZL-1 with a stock muffler/resonator system and it was very quiet.

Thanks, William.  So you think that I should take them off and go with just the crossflow muffler if I want to leave a low rumble?

In my experience the muffler only system has an odd, tinny sound.

Thanks, I decided to just leave it as is, with resonators only. It sounds like a "muscle car" this way.
