Does anyone who visits these boards know anything about this car? It's a real Z28 but someone has changed the cowl tag. Probably to change the color. The drive train is real and the car is for sale at Ash Tisdelle Classic Cars in Orange Park, FL. I looked at the car yesterday.

Actually, I have other 02D real tags in my data base with vins in the 9N607 range.

Chevy Thunder, how can you tell this is a fake tag? Would be nice to know the signs when looking at other cars. Can you show the difference with a real Cowl Tag next to it?.....Danny

We don't discuss that in an open forum - it would help the tag-fakers do a better job.

My 02D is 9N6131111. The body number is very late at 265042.

Update: My client is trying to track past owners. The selling dealership owner of the car states that the cowl tag is real and I'm misguided with my report and data. This is what I deal with all the time. The big money owners are always right and the specialists are always wrong.
I was hoping that we could come up with a past owner on one of these web sites. No luck so far. My client did track down the guy who restored the car but he will not return phone calls. Stay tuned.

Not that this pertains to this specific car, but I echo Jerry's sentiments about the experts who aren't. I contacted HBC to let them know the radiator tag they had for the 68Z28 was wrong and I was told the pattern came off his original 68Z28 tag and that was impossible as it was wrong.

Not to give anything away...but if you guys want to see how you can tell a a real tag from the one pictured here...just take a look at the tag on your car and compare it. It was a nice education for me and after a few minutes, it is painfully obvious how bad this fake is. Sometimes things can be too perfect and the old style fonts will never truly be copied properly. Kinda like no matter how hard the parts suppliers try, a repro part just never seems to be as good as the original.
I guess good advice if you are going to lay some serious money down on a first gen, give Jerry or another expert a call. It may not be as expensive as you think, especially if it keeps you from being had. I can speak first hand that Jerry has saved literally tens of thousands of dollars on one particular Camaro that was misrepresented.
I miss the good old days when only the Corvette guys had to worry about this sort of nonsense and our Camaros were just cheap Corvette wannabes. When you could buy a $500 basket case and quickly get upside down in it.
