Do these sheet rubber sheilds actually tuck into the oval openings in the upper control arm? I have seen it done and it kind of makes sense. Perhaps Johnz can tell us if the factory took this extra step.

Yes, they do. The long flap at the bottom is designed to tuck into the slot adjacent to the inboard end of the control arm, as shown in the Assembly Manual (UPC 11/13); photo below of my original '69.
