how far back do the stripes go back on the doors ?both of my 68s have repaints so i dont know where the factory ones should stop .my buddy dug a 68 out of a junk yard that has been sitting for about 30 yrs and his stopped 28 inches from the front of the door gap.1of of my 68 has the stripe almost the entire lenght of the door and the other stops at the the door handle.

The AIM won't help you either. It has 3 different measurements in 3 different section. I know, I was trying to figure out the Bumble Bee stripe width...
Did you try a search? Even the thread where I ask about width contains it. Or at least mentions it.

tried a search didnt hit on much. looks like someone here would have an original car but i guess not

I have the outer skin of a 68 ss/rs door that still has the stripe on it.
I'll dig it out over the weekend & see what I can tell you. Could you send me a reminder e-mail at
jiaccino@cox.net please? Joe

Sorry. I found the thread I was talking about on Team Camaro. It really doesn't answer your question, anyway. Did you try a search on there? Doing a search here on CRG, I did see that they mention the application proceedure (for a '69). But...

I sent you some pictures. They're 45-3/4" back. They're almost centerline with the door lock. That might've been their intensions. It might be different depending on who installed them at the factory. There is also about a 1/4" that curls around the front edge of the door. You would'nt want to see color there if you were looking at the car from different angles......Joe

Origional cracked vinyl stripes: http://classicmotor-sports.com/ShowCar.asp?ID=50

thanks guys but wasnt the stripes painted on at the factory instead of vinyl or was that a dealership thing?
-
Painted on front, vinyl on rear. Nose was off the car so how would they know where it would line up with the doors?
-
The fender portion of the stripe was masked and painted before the front sheet metal was installed on the body; once the front clip went on and the fenders were fitted to the doors and secured, the vinyl door portion was installed, using the end of the painted fender stripe to locate the vinyl. Fisher Body painted and trimmed the body shell from the firewall back, and Chevrolet painted and installed the front sheet metal.

My question was rhetorical.

all the originals I have seen go to the center of the door lock but sadly i was not measuring them... my repro's door decals seem to be slightly shorter... ending close to the door lock, i.e. if you want to really split hairs... good lock and don't get to caught up in this exact stuff, rather do a really good job and enjoy the car... just my 2cents ;D
