Hello first post here
What is the easiest method to replace just the gas tank straps on a 1969 model. I am hoping that I do not need to take out the tank in order to get this done.

You shouldn't need to remove the tank if you have a means of supporting the tank in place while you remove and replace the straps that hold it in. Tips: Remove as much of or all of the fuel before you begin. Spray the retaining bolts with Liquid Wrench or equivalent several times in the day preceding the procedure. Make sure that you have a socket deep enough to slide over the retaining bolt and reach the nut. Use a flat board on a floor jack to avoid bending the bottom of the tank. Remove and replace the straps one at a time.

Thanks for the advice. Sounds simple enough. My main question centers on the u shaped end of the strap on the axle side. Is is possible to remove it
without bending it open?

That's correct - see the Assembly Manual, UPC 8, sheet B4; remove the screw through the looped end of the strap, and they'll come right out. Re-use the screws on the new straps, and don't install any insulator strips between the new straps and the tank - they were never there from the factory, although the vendors think they were.

The AIM shows the tork setting on the rear strap that attaches to the bolt at 80-110Lbs in. would that be 6.6-9.1 Ft. Lbs?

Yup - just divide inch-lbs. by 12 to get ft-lbs.
