Title: L89 842 Aluminum Heads cast date?
Post by: rally on May 31, 2010, 08:22:52 PM
Gentlemen i have apair of 842 69 heads, but one head has no cast date to be found anywhere. Would this head be a service head? I bought these heads from a person who claimed this set was a 69 cast date pair. Is this one head a service head, if so what numbers do i need to look for and where?

Cast numbers and dates should appear on the parts whether is was service or not.  The thing that is different between original and "service" or over the counter is usually the application code (CE blocks) or date stamps (carbs).  I wonder if the date was ground off???  Is there a 3 digit code present?

There is a change (according to Chevrolet By the Numbers) that might help a little: "1968 and early '69 had plugs in both ends of the heads.  Approximately in June '69 one of the plugs was eliminated from the heads."

I will check this head and see about the plugs or plug missing. Also i dont recall any cast numbers being ground off, but will look again thoroughly. I will get back to you flying. Thanks
