Title: Need Help and or Advice
Post by: crownroyal58 on January 19, 2010, 01:56:19 AM
I have a 69 camaro that i am pretty sure was originally a small block car, now it has a b.b. My problem is that after installing the engine it appears to me that it sets to far forward, there is plenty of room in between the block and firewall to acess the bell houseing bolts, most that i have seen are very tight. The the clutch adjustment rod is to short, the bell crank is angled foward, and when installing the crank pulley it has very little clearence, if any at the frame.
I realize that the b.b. requires special mounts that attach to the frame for the motor mounts, the ones i have, have these numbers stamped in them, the left side which is taller is 3950113, the right side is 3950114, both after market as well as the bell crank and clutch adjustment ass.
The 4-speed trans lined up with the trans mount with out any problem, the drive shaft measures 50" center to center. Does any one have ANY advice???

Is there a number stamped in the sub frame, and if so where?

Are you able to take some pictures and post them here?  That would help us to see the actual distance (place ruler in pic) from the wall, etc.

Steve

Steve,
Tried to send picture, but it said error, file to large, sorry i don't know how to copress and make smaller. For what it is worth the measurement you are looking for is 2 inches from the flat surface of the firewall to the back edge of the block. These measurements where taken on the right side of car.

Thanks, Mike

Mike

I have a 396 in my 68.  Will check the spacing.  Will likely be tomorrow before I can get to it.

Mike

Checked my car and it looks like 2" is correct.  About 1-1/2 inches to the back of the distributor.  I could easily get my hand (size lg) down behind the block.  Hope this info helps you.

What is that picture, a crank pulley and a sway bar?  Gotta show a little more of the area.  If thats the sway bar passing in front of the pulley then its the wrong swaybar, because a 69 swaybar is bent so it follows the front edge of the subframe, it should not be a couple of inches up above the top of the subframe.

Thank You Steve, it does help to let me know the engine is not to far foward!

Mark, the black bar you see is part of the frame, not sway bar. Hope this picture gives you a better view.

Thanks for any advice i can get!!!!!!!
Mike

AFTER READING NUMEROUS POST I THOUGHT THERE WAS A GREAT DEAL OF WISDOM AND EXPERIENCE WITHIN THIS FORUM, MY MISTAKE! THANKS TO THOSE THAT DID MAKE THE EFFORT.

There is a lot of wisdom and experence here. Not all of it extends to all issues. I have a 69 automatic, but no big block experience. There is also a wealth of information outside of the forum, waiting for you on the rest of the site.

The Crank Pulley Is Part #3937787 Which Should Be Correct For A/C Car.

I can't get my (fat) finger between the 2 grove pulley and frame in my '68...  It's a short pump engine.  Hope my 3 grove cast pulley fits!

i have tried the 2 groove pulley and have approx. .75 inch clearance. i also installed new frame mounts and engine mounts and only gained about 1/8 inch clearane with the 3 groove pulley. so guess i won't be installing a/c.
now that i have remedy for the pulley clearance problem, another problem has came up. i now don't have enough space between the water pump and the 4 core radiator to use the clutch fan. can anyone tell me why?

I have solid mounts.  So, as long as I can get a belt on my 3 grove, I'll be happy...

I seem to have a lot of room between my pump/flex fan and 4 core.  You may want to check the radiator application data on CRG/here.  I vaguely recall that the 4 core really wasn't used much.?.?  I'm not sure which way I will eventually go: repro fan and clutch or electric fan(s).  You also my want to check the motor and trany mount data, too...

i have two electric fans attached to a griffin alumn. radiator thats installed on a 72 chev. truck, the motor is the ram jet 350 crate engine and i have heating problems with this set up. with the fan and clutch set up it cools with no problem, so u may want to give some serios thought to using electric fans. not to mention the amount of current they draw.

A few years ago I had the same 4 core vs. fan clutch issue.   There are at least 2 different versions of the fan clutch,  the first one I tried was about 1/16" away from the radiator,  way too close!   After going back and forth with my local Chev dealer and Ricks First Gen I found a clutch that gave me about 5/16" of clearance.   I believe it was a Delco unit,  but I'm sorry I can't be sure.

thanks Bill, i presently have a delco clutch and have about 3/16" clearance. just find it hard to beleive you would have to remove the radiator to put a belt on or a water pump.

Thanks for the electric fan advise!

Just eyeballing it w/ a tape measure, I have about 5 inches between the front of the pump pulley to the radiator.  Does that mean the fan and clutch set up is about 4 11/16"?  I have a flex fan and extension on there now and there is about 2 3/4" of space...

The fan and clutch set up i have is about three inches. The fan is the orig. 772 fan with a delco clutch.
