Title: Rare 67 Z28
Post by: camaroteach on November 26, 2009, 02:08:13 PM
Just discovered this forum and was wondering how rare a 67 Z28 I had bought new was. The car was oredered in British Racing Green with white stripes. It had a black bucket seat interior with 4 spd trans. It also had the hide away headlights. Now the good stuff. It was ordered with the 302 engine. The car was delivered to me with the  headers and chambered exhaust in the trunk, the cross ram dual quad intake in the box. It had the heater box deleted and the air cleaner had a hose that installed where the heater box was to get the ram air from the cowl. The car also had disc brakes on the front. I have never seen another one exactly like it and I wish I had it today.

P.S. This car replaced my special order (COPO) 1965 Chevelle 396 425HP drag car.

There was no chambered exhaust in 67.

That is why the exhaust was in the trunk. The factory would not install it at that time. The car was ordered for me by a dealer in Pa that was very involved in racing at that time.

I will try to find the pics, but after going through two divorces I am not sure I still have them. The car was setup for drag racing and I was told that it was almost identical to the cars Penske was running in the Can Am series at that time. I know that the Penske cars had 4 wheel disc brakes and of couse he modified the suspension for road racing, but the engine, headers, intake that was all the same.

British green was a '68 color and the crossram was not available until '68, even if your name was Roger Penske. The only green available in '67 was the much lighter Mountain green. Are you certain what you had was a '67 and not a '68 Z? What was the name of the dealership you ordered the car from?

I think we'd all enjoy seeing some pictures, if some can be found. I did have some questions about his car based on what was posted. I'm not trying to chase him off in any way or be demeaning. As the old saying goes, pictures are worth a thousand words...

Sorry but when he says he had chambered exhaust in 67 I question all of it. He says he ordered it ? How did you order Chambered in 67 ? Has anyone ever heard of chambered in 67 ? How do you even fit a exhaust system in the trunk ?

Aluminum heads were very briefly optional on the '60 Corvette. They had porosity problems and although withdrawn as an option several examples still exist. Hardly a "back door" part.

As for the car in question your memories conflict with facts established over more than 40 years of scrutiny. So look for the pictures, give it some more thought but please get back to us!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess he ordered a 68 in 1967 and mistook what he had.

Jerry.... how many chambered exhaust systems have you seen for 67 or 68 Camaro's ? What are the odds of him ordering chambered and having it come in the trunk along with the crossram and headers ?

Looks like I started an argument going. I said the car was rare and might have been a one of a kind. It was built for drag racing since I had a strong running Chevelle before that and wanted to stay with Chevy.. The car was a 67 not a 68. The exhaust fit in the trunk because the rear seat seat folded down (before it was removed for racing). The exhaust was in about ten pieces. The front header pipes, two straight back chambered sections, two over the axle pipes, two chamber pipes across the rear and two tailpipes. It also had the multi leaf springs on the rear. How many have you seen with the cross ram, factory headers and heater delete? It was custom built for racing only.

OT - The aluminum heads were not a big success. If they would have worked, they would not be so rare today. ;)

Charley.......I would say two chances, slim and none.  Headers were only available in '67 and '68, to order chambered, it would have to be ordered after the GM memo came out (11-25-68) deleting it from std production on Z28 and L78.  That would have to make the car a '69 Camaro.  We all know that no cross rams came in the trunk, so I suspect we'll have to see some photos if any can be found.

Are you aware that when you have a fold down rear seat there is a divider panel that keeps the trunk a separate compartment  ?  Did the factory just ram those pieces thru the divider panel ?

Those aluminum heads never saw production in Corvettes - although they were shown as available in early advertising for the 1960 model year on the "315hp" fuelie, none were ever produced for retail sale (due to porosity problems) and the production engines used iron heads, carried over from 1959. The factory-supported 1960 Camoradi Corvettes for LeMans didn't use them either, although they were made available for those race cars - they used the iron heads instead. The casting porosity problems weren't solved until the late 80's.

Jerry, Jack Podell (Corvette fuel injection rebuilder) has been advertising a pair of those heads at $10K for about three years, with no takers.

Sounds like a very rare "one of none" to me.

Yes the first Z/28's made had the 4P code on the cowl tag.  These were made at the end of December 1966 and first of January 1967 but there aren't many of them.

I would say that this car needs some sort of documentation to determine if it is legit or not. Pictures would help , but actual documentation would be needed to prove the existance of such a rare car. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think there is any supporting evidence out there that this sort of package was even considered for the 67 year. If nothing can be verified, then I guess the whole issue will fall under the old bench racer stories file. Let's see if anything can be proven. enough said!    Clem

Oh, by the way, wouldn't it be a fantastic find if it turned out to be true! This would definately be one for the books! I am just as sceptical as the rest of you by the way.  Clem

We have also figured out how many of the 67 Z28's had the 4P on the tag and the first car to have the 4L on the tag.

Most of you know this, and not to reflect on the car in question, but my references show an early prototype small block cross ram to have been developed 10/67, reviewed by Chevrolet Engineering and Smokey Yunick, and finally released after tweaking as a heavy duty service part- over the counter December '67 for homologation into '68 Trans Am series.

If you can find any documentation for the car- even just the VIN #, there is a fair chance you may be able to locate the car- since many 1967 Z28 survivors are accounted for. This would no doubt be a great moment for you if you could be reunited with the car. If you try to go this route, best of luck. It is certainly not out of the question that you may find the car.

Jerry MacNeish, who posted in this thread might be of help with a known VIN- I personally put a lot of stock in his knowledge!!!:
