Title: Fan Shroud Bolt
Post by: sdkar on November 26, 2009, 01:56:36 AM
I have this 12 pointed bolt with built in washer top dead center that holds the fan shroud to an L bracket.  Is this the proper bolt or did GM just use a regular 6 point bolt?

Throw that bolt in the rubbish.

3/8" indented head with built in flat washer for '69.  Every '69 you see has the incorrect bolt in it!

Do 69 BB and SB the same bolt? 9419380..

AIM only shows "V8 engine". Nothing in L35.
Any pictures of an original? ..Please..  :-* ;D

The bolt size would be 3/8 not the head or wrench size.

3/8 is the correct wrench size and the bolt is 5/16

Here's the original fan shroud bolt.

AMK catalogue shows 1/4" diameter and 3/8" flange head, part # 9419380 from the AIM. Also AIM # 120386 flat washer.

'67 and '68 use a 1/2" indented head (wrench size), bolt is actually 5/16 x 18,

In 68 the part number is 3846202, 5/16" x 18 x 7/8". Same bolt that's used on the hood pin plate to the hood and for the front shock absorbers. It has a captured washer. The ones I have are RBW head markings.

3846202 is a regular body bolt with a much smaller 3/4" conical washer and wouldn't be correct for 69. Definitely different to John Z's example.

The same bolt with a 1" captured conical washer would be AMK's B-12113 on pg 103.

The question from me is..
Does the 69 bolt have a captured washer and is the washer with this bolt flat? Conical washers are intended for more torque than a plastic shroud can take.

The '69 fan shroud bolt is #9419380, not the 5/16"-18 machine thread 202 bolt used in '68; it's a 1/4" sheet metal screw into a special stamped U-nut.

John what headmarking does that bolt have?

Thanks,

THe AIM indicates a # 120386 flat washer along with the #9419380 screw.
