Title: window crank
Post by: cabinrange on November 23, 2009, 01:05:34 AM

I hope someone can help me.
I have a 1968 Camaro that I bought from the original owner in 1976. It was ordered with RPO-730 parchment/black deluxe interior.
The window cranks have chrome metal knobs. The pattern on the knob matches that of the pattern on the base of the crank arm: and the knob is riveted on.
The window crank arm is stamped #5719477.
I have always assumed they were aftermarket knobs riveted on to GM cranks.

My question is - Did GM ever offer on '68 Camaros (or any other of their models prior to 1976) window cranks with chrome metal knobs? Or did I assume correctly?
    Thanx

Are they the metal knob that the plastic fits over?

That number was used for 68, but those same basic handles were used on various Chevrolet models from 1959 through the mid 70's. Starting with the 1967 model year, the metal knobs were covered in plastic. However, the knobs themselves were still basically the same, so I would bet someone just cut the plastic off yours or replaced them with earlier model handles.

Same part, just without the plastic on the knobs.

Window crank handles were color coded to the interior in '67 (unique knobs)  and '68 and clear on the '69 models.

I believe Ed has nailed it.
That would explain the number matching cranks.
I didn't know GM just upgraded them by overlaying existing cranks with plastic covers.
And according to Jerry; I would need pearl/parchment plastic knobs to be factory correct.
Too bad.....I can't find that color anywhere. NOS or repop!
    Thanx guys

those ARE NOT 1968 crank's they are 1967 and previous , the chrome knob's are 1966 and earlier , those are not even close to what 1968 up crank's look like ,

THE 67 plastic knob's were totally different from those chrome one's , they DID NOT put plastic over chrome the 67 plastic knob's are unique to the 1967 model year ,

the parchment knob's are out there but are rare , they pop up on ebay all the time ,

also they are now reproduced and might I say VERY WELL REPRODUCED ! for the 1967 model's ,

but they are not cheap , if you want 5719477 crank's with parchment knob's get your credit card out and here they are $39.99 each ! , but these ARE NOT CORRECT FOR 68 up ,
