my FED EX guy who is a car guy, asked me a question, " if you blew that thing what would you replace it with", hell i don't know i said, which got me thinking,,,,, short of spending an arm and a leg for a correct 302 ci motor, what would be your choice in SB's ???

If you are going to drive it a lot, I would build a 383 or 350 that looks like an original 302.

LS9 crate motor... ;D

A SHP 327 dressed up like a 302 would yield simmilar (better) performance with cheaper parts that are easier to find. Most people would never know the difference. Same sounds with slighlty more torque would keep the nostalgia feel to it.
I would want to keep some of the 302 "experience" that comes with owning the car. :)

$22,000,00 plus, so much for the arm and leg,, lol , yeah i was thinking the zz383 crate would be a nice alternative

I have my DZ block in a bag and a 10.5:1 compression 74 L/82 under the hood.

I pretty much did this with my Z10 350. I put the original engine on a stand and replaced it with a ZZ4. I've used aluminum valve cover adapters to attach the original valve covers and painted the block chevy orange. Too the average Joe, it looks pretty original. I was at a car show a few years ago, and a young father was pointing to my engine and told his 10 year old son that the engine was a "Rare Aluminum Headed Engine". Didn't have the heart to correct him.
Oh, the ZZ4 is a great engine, it really woke the car up, and the original is tucked safely away in the garage.
