Are there star washers between the VR and radiator support when mounted?
Nope - just the self-tapping sheet metal screws that attach it.

As I thought.
I keep getting a varied voltage reading after Pirkle has rebuilt the VR. I have sent it back to him twice the second time he found a loose resistor so I thought the problem was cured. Last night I installed got a 13 volt reading once, then a 16.6 then a 17-18 volt reading. The funny thing is that my amp gauge is steady not pulsating...the gauge looks like I have a normal charge scenario. I took the original one off and put the auto zone model back on and have a nice 14 volt reading with a good amp gauge reading. I don't know what to do. Any ideas other than calling Pirkle back.

Why do I have it in my mind that there might be some rubber expansion mounts behind the regulator, like they use on one side of a radiator???? Am I just loosin it?

Well nuts were not used on 69's.

I have a dated rebuilt original that has started to charge high, then discharge, then go neutral. I bought it somewhere else, but I hope Pirkle can fix it.
By the way, the gauge is a mili-volt meter, not an ammeter. It measures the drop on a wire between the terminal block and the horn relay. I thought that was interesting.

I sent mine back to Pirkle yesterday. He is going to replace the resistors. After talking to him he did not rebuild it when I sent it to him the first time. He replated the base set it and then repainted the cover.
I should have just repainted the cover and left well enough alone. Mine is the same VR that the car left the factory with and worked perfect before hand. Live and learn. I hope John can fix it I want to put that one on the car.

Don't forget there is the possiblity you may have to tweak the spring inside to adjust the voltage at the battery depending on how it works with your present system.

Well nuts were not used on 69's.
I don't think that's true. IIRC, early 69's had the well nuts and a ground wire.

That makes sense. I have an October 68 build. My original rad support is long gone and I don't recall if the repro used the well nuts or not. :)

I got my original VR back from Pirkle and it is now operating correctly. I hope it lasts.
