Title: loosening the power steering pump
Post by: my124677n on September 28, 2009, 12:28:01 AM
This should be an easy one, but on my '67 small block with power steering (no a/c), I loosened the one bolt on the power steering pump (within the slide area) which I thought would allow me to push the pump toward the center of the engine (so that I could remove the belt), but it will only budge a small amount. Still too much tension to remove the belt. Any other bolts that need to be removed or loosened.  Thanks.

You also need to loosen the bolt that the p/s pump pivots on.

If you dont have one you may want to buy yourself a Chasis Service Manual and also a Assembly Instruction Manual. Not trying to be a smart a. These manuals are a great help.

Have fun!

Just a tip for re-installation.
I use a strap wrench to help get a grip on the pump when tightening the belt when I am by myself. It won't scratch the housing. I have seen a lot of the pumps bashed in on one side from someone using a pry bar. This works well on the 1st gen small blocks.
