Title: Original 10 bolt oil type
Post by: Daniel Cate on March 27, 2006, 03:32:13 AM
What is the correct weight of rear end gear oil for an original 1968 10 bolt rear? Also how much in quantity? I haven't taken the time to dig through my assembly manual. I'm sure the info's in there if someone has a page reference I'll dig it out. Thanks, Dan

Dan,

90wt Hypoid Gear Oil is the original lube for the rear end and the manual transmissions. If you have Posi, you also need to add the posi lube.

There's a plug on the side that you fill it from, and when it starts leaking out, it's full. As for exact quantity, I "believe" it's a few quarts, but I'm not close to my service manual right now to verify that. I'm sure someone else can...

10-bolt is 3-1/2 pints, 12-bolt is 4-1/2 pints.  :)

Hey! I was only off by a few pints!! (That should make a nice mess on the garage floor...)
