Freinds shop is working on a JH coded 1969 camaro
 cowl tag is 07A
it has a 661 muncie side case.

Does this seem right?

over the phone he cant find the vin number on the trans.....he can see it..he just cant read it.

is an 06A car a late production? i'm not sure whats concidered late production for the 69 model year since they were biult well into 70.

Is it 06A or 07A?

For some reason all bodies built in June were dated 06A, all July bodies are 07A. Not really late production. 1969 Camaro production did not extend into 1970. 1969 Camaro production ended at Norwood in early November 1969.

According to Chevrolet By The Numbers all 1969 Muncie 4-speeds had main case #3925660. Muncie tech data indicates M22s had #3925661 but documeted 69 M22s all seem to have the 660 case. The 661 case was used for 1970 & up model years. The trans in the car may not be the original. If it is the original it is unusual.

06A might be considered late had not the production run extended into November.  I have an X11 car dated 10C with body number 1425XX.  I've always had the feeling that it's a legitimate "late" production unit.

I have a 10E car with body #152430, VIN #704511.

I'd say it's too early for a 661 housing. Not many 661 housings in 69, but none that early.
They were 1970 castings and 07A is still part of the old model year.

What is the date code of the transmission in question?  Date code should be on the passenger side, near where the main case and tailhousing bolt together.   VIN will most likely be on the top of the transmission, near where the main case and tailhousing bolt together.

While it is in the car, it will be difficult to read the VIN on the transmission.  You can try a small inspection mirror with an extendable handle but even that doesn't work sometimes.

Latest research has indicated that some 661 cases were used at the end of the 1969 Camaro run.  E. Hartnet, a known Muncie rebuilder in PA has an original 661 M22 case with vin stamp and drain plug.

Depends on the topic. Here, late it the last two months.
