Title: 1967 LED Tail lights - Do you like - or not? Poll with photos.....
Post by: PANTHER-BUFF on June 18, 2009, 01:10:21 AM
??? I just installed some LED tailights - and before the purists knuckle my head, I did it for safety!

They were an easy install and when you mash the brakes you will give the driver behind you a sunburn.  I do cruises at night and I was tired of all the kids driveing on my rear bumper and then stopping.  What do ya think.  They will be any easy change back - just change lense and add bulbs.  Can't tell anything from the trunk side.
Your opinion is appreciated - I am mixed!

I am all for safety, especially with all the knuckle head drivers.  I plan on putting a newer, safer seat belt in my future car.  It is a shame they can't come up with something like HID's or something.  At least that way you could tell the difference.

Interesting post...

I like them and would keep them.

I understand the safety issue but favor orginality.
I do agree with Heckler about other drivers.  I don't know which is worst: the people that tailgate you without even seeing your brake lights come on yet or the ones that almost side swipe you pulling along side to get a better look...

Another mention that pertains to safety would be brakes!!!  People like to "swoop and sit" right in front of you.  At the least a added booster and even a four wheel disc conversion seems acceptable.

I'm 30 and do like the modern touches out there, but I like the exterior to look stock to keep with the nostalgia of it.  I think modern touches are fine when it comes to materials that are of better quality.  Other then that if you plan to update or severely modify, go all the way or don't pretend.  But hey...it's your car and your hobby, love what you do! ;D

I'm from the older generation and generally favor keeping cars mostly original. I've made slight changes to my RS, keeping to period additions. As long as it's an easy switch back to a factory look, I say keep them and see how you feel down the road.
I understand where you're coming from, safety is a major issue. Maintaining your and your car's health is very costly.

Love the safety but don't like the look.  Don't they make individual LED bulbs now that you could just pop in the original tail light housing?

Like the safety and ability to return to stock. I do favor originality. But if your car is a driver I give thumbs up.

In the late 70's, I took a old pair of tail light housing for a 69 and made the in side lights a brake and turn light for safety...I had a drunk rear end me when I was turning right and in the turn lane..so my second car I made sure you could see the turn signal and brake..still looked stock but with two lights on...69 only has the outside light as a brake and turn,,@*@(now).....@**   SS     **@  (then)

And to be fair, since my 68 Camaro is a driver, I do have power, front disc brakes, halogen headlights and radial tires....

I agree with you - I like the safety thing but I'm not sold on the look.  Looks a little like Christmas when you hit the brakes.  With out any lights on they don't look bad, but they are quite of few shades lighter in red.  The factory lenses are a deep red.  I figure I'll run them a while and see how I like them.  I do like originality-but bolt on stuff is not a biggee, as long as I can easily change back to original.  Just like the wheels -I like the 17's but I also like original rallye's and period correct stuff.

I am curious what this looks like, I have never seen it. Anyone running these?
I like the look of what you did on a full blown custom like the Ring Brothers or others. Check it out if you never saw thier 69. http://www.ringbrothers.com/

I appreciate the time and talent it takes to win riddlers etc but I am always most impressed by a full on original car. Every kid in every generation can bolt on some knock off part from Oreilly's and has, but it is rare to see one that has actually been untouched. I'm not talking about a rebuild or brougt back to original either. Those are nice as well but a few years ago I saw an original straight six plain jane camaro that was 100% unmpolested. Original paint etc. Given the setup was undesiredable but they wanted 6 grand and I always think back to it and wish I bought it or could find it now. It was really impressive to see it survive in that condition.

On the fence. I like them both depending on the application. Custom or original. I will leave mine as is.

I've been "on the fence" about LED taillights for my '56 Chevy. They don't have very big taillights anyway. I DON'T like the look, to "rice burner". But if it would keep some stupid driver from smakin' the back of my car then..................

I recommend them from a safety standpoint, especially if you have a small tail light.  They were recommended to me from a guy who had a 39 Chevrolet.  Someone told him they could barely see his tail lights when they followed him, he changed his and was pleased.  I'm not pleased with the look as much, but my car is no trailer queen and it is frequently out at night - it was a huge difference as far as the light output.  It is also any easy change back.  I guess if I want to show as an original I will change back, about 30 minutes.  Until then, I will ride and hopefully be much more visable.  I'm more into the cruise in scene than the car show thing.  It's a tuff pill for me to swallow because I really believe in preserving originals, but I also believe in saving my car and my a$$.

To each his own - I like them all and completely understand the arguments!

I followed a set out of Carlisle this weekend. Didn't really like the look, but they were VERY effective.
