Title: POP anomaly??
Post by: 68ashgoldRS/SS on June 15, 2009, 05:29:38 PM
Hello, I've got a 68 RS/SS.  I have a "4" on position C-16 that is supposed to be blank???   Anyone have any ideas what this might indicate?  The full 7 character string (C-15 thru C-21) is: 3452112

Do you have an LA built car? This was used for either the B93 (Door Edge Guards) or the B37 (Floor Mats) in 1968, but it should be either a 1 or a 3, not a 4. We're still researching this so can you send me a picture of your POP and your Trim Tag? My email address is in my profile to the left.

Thanks Ed,  yes... it is an LOS car.  The car does have tilt steering... wondering if it could be that?    I'll get some preliminary photos out to you now (traces of the POP and Trim Tag), and get you the real deals tonight.  Thanks again for your help.  Ed

Got it James. Thanks.

Only certain options were included on the POP's, so I'm not sure if this is just a mistake (probably) or if it has any meaning. I know the tilt column wasn't included on the POP so it's not that. Do you happen to have the door edge guards by chance?

I'll forward this to Kurt to see if he has any ideas.

No, but the car did come with side molding that I quickly removed....  Also came with a headrests, clock, special dome light, grab bar, that were not on the POP...... maybe one of those?

That's strange. You have the gold "standard" interior so you shouldn't have a grab bar. What color is it?

Are you referring to the over head "Dome" light in the roof? If so, that was standard on the Coupe so you should have one.

Headrest seats weren't marked on the POP and the clock was only indicated in 1967 (and that was a number 1 in the "b" field), so it "shouldn't" be either of these.

I'm thinking it's just a mistake, but I'll let Kurt comment.

The Grab bar is dark green like the dash pad.  The dome light is like a map light with two separate lights in one housing.  My Uncle bought the car "used" in '69.  So it's been in the family for all but one year... he stated that they came with the vehicle....  oh.... one more option that it may be..... how about the "remote mirror"  or passenger mirror?    Thanks for passing this along to Kurt.... now I'm really curious.... Let me know if you would still like a photo of the POP.  Ed

Can you send me a picture of the dome light? I've never seen one with two lights in it! And a picture of the grab handle as well. This "shouldn't be installed in your car. Although I have a very early doc showing the grab bar as part of the Z23 interior Style Trim Group, as far as we know, it was never actually part of the option and didn't make it into any cars.

The remote mirror wasn't indicated on the POP and the passengers outside mirror wasn't a factory option (dealer only), so again these don't fit the profile. I'm curious also!!

Yes, please email me a picture of the POP and the Trim Tag. A few pictures of the car itself would also be nice.

Thanks
Ed

I think it's not a typo. 1 indicated some option (going thru the data again, I think B37/B93) and 3 indicated another option (probably U35 clock). 4 indicates that it had both options. First time we've seen a car with both. Cool.

But I'm not buying the dome light yet. ;)

Thank you Kurt.  Wow... well it's kind of cool to have a "first"!   BTW, I'm researching the light... the part number on it is: 1679857.    Thanks again, Ed

Hello, it's been a few years since this was discussed, and was curious if any further information has been found on this particular POP code....
1968, RS/SS, car built in late 67...
Positions C-15 thru C21.... My POP reads 3452112 in these positions respectivley.  According to the POP decoder, field C16 is supposed to be blank for '68 cars..  If I interpreted correctly, Kurt believes that it is an aggregation of two options (1 +3)=4

Was just wondering if anyone else has come across this.  Thanks, Ed

Ed, just reading this post, I know it's old. My x11 has standard interior with the grab bar.

Ed, just reading this post, I know it's old. My x11 has standard interior with the grab bar.

As does my 10C (1969) X11 coupe.

Gents, he's referring to a 68, not a 69. Completely different when it comes to the dash handle (grab bar).

And no, no new info has been found.

Thanks for all the responses fellas, appreciate it.  Was off the the forum for a few years, and am now reengaging to get the car finished after my embarrassingly long 20+ yr restoration  :-[ ...   This is by far the best source of help to get the car back to it's "born with" configuration as possible.  Great people, great help!   Thanks all! Couldn't do it without all your expertise!  Ed

On Pontiac Build sheets they add the numbers as well, if BOX (X) is used for options 1, 2, 4 a 3 would indicate 1 & 2, a 5 would indicate 1 & 4.
Notice there is no 3 as that would give 2 ways to add to 5 and no way to discern which was which.

68ashgoldRS/SS,
What did you ever determine about your dome light?

Ok, well it's good to know that there is consistency within GM which supports this!  Thank you for that!
Turns out the dome light was an aftermarket that my uncle put on the car in the early 70's.   (he remembered it after I shot him a pic of it, and retracted his original born with statement)   But it did look pretty cool!  Of course I went back to original :)
