Title: 68 fender support shield?
Post by: ccargo on June 02, 2009, 05:14:42 PM
I took this off a 68 when doing a restoration a few years back. It was attached to the driver side fender support brace at the lower mounting holes. It had the remains of a rubber skirt but now only has the staple. Does anyone know the application for this piece and if its even original to camaro? I can't find it in the AIM. I'd also be interested to know what the rubber skirt looked like?

I have 2 of them and yes it's an origional part. The skirt is still attached to mine but I have to dig it out to get a pic. Another member may have one on file. There's also a clip that attaches to part of the skirt which then attaches to the fender. Those brackets and flaps often get tossed over the years.

ccargo, yes that is used on all 67-9 Camaro's and it attaches to the driver's side rear brace for the inner fender. The mounting can be found in the AIM under Section 11-13 sheets B1 & B2, or if yours is numbered see pages 140 & 141. I have one with the rubber still attached and the clip is still in place. The clip actually attaches to the small "lip" of metal to the driver's side of the firewall, see sheet B1 upper lh corner for attaching of the rubber. I will get you some pictures later today of one off of the car, and one with it mounted. Very simple to install once you see the AIM..........RatPack.............

My misinformation on the fastening of the clip. As RP stated it's goes on the FW. near the e-brake cable. I'll pass on the pistol whipping as my punishment.

Splash shield for the clutch linkage. I'm not sure that they were also put on cars with automatic trans.

All cars got them no matter the trans, and my guess is it was a splash shield for the wiring harness/fuse panel possibly the e-brake cable also.................RatPack..................

I'm tearing this apart but you can see where the e-brake passes through and the mounting clip.

Thanks so much to all of you for the information. It's all about sharing and learning here and I learned something this week :) That makes for a good week in my book! Now to figure out how to reproduce the rubber flap and clip..... hmmm.
