Title: 68 z28 dipstick tube
Post by: 68Zproject on May 17, 2009, 03:54:46 PM
I re-read the posts that others and myself had on the 68 z28 dipstick and I finally got the one that is correct.  Trouble is, I'm still getting a reading of almost 1/2 qt. over full after my oil change.  Are there different length tubes that go into the block for the dipstick?  I got a repro or whatever from Rick's and I believe it just said "all small blocks".  Is this one somehow different than the ones that came on the engine originally or what?  I don't know what else it could be.  Any ideas?  I hate to be so anal about this, but it's frustrating to have everything I'm supposed to have and it doesn't seem to work.

Did you check it before or after starting it up? Until you have run it there is no oil in the new filter. That would probably explain the 1/2 quart over.

Are there different length dipstick tubes for the smallblock?  Are the ones being sold today the same length as the ones that came on the car?  I don't know what else it could be if I have the right dipstick.

According to the 4 of 83' parts book the 65-69 small block tube is the same part#. The stick is 68 only all small block.

did you use a full quart filter or the short half quart filter?

Full quart NAPA Gold.  I looked at an old dipstick tube off a 69 DZ engine and it was a hair shorter than the one I have.  That's why I wondered if the ones they are selling now are a little different.

It's teh GM pan for 302 I got at Rick's 5 years ago.  I compared it to an original and it was identical that I could see.

The problem is the reproduction dipstick tube. As is usually the case with reproduction parts they are just not right for some reason. These repro manufacturers, for some reason, just can't seem to get these parts exactly right. I have an NOS one if you need it. PM me.

This was a GM tube.  It compared to the original DX one by being a bit longer which should have made it show a bit low, not too full.  If I get a chance I'll measure it.

Is it curved or straight? I believe it should be curved slightly.  The ones I have are number 3876870.

Is your dipstick  a 'gray' tipped round? It should have 'low/full/engine oil M' on the stick. Is the tube curved and how long is it?

The tube is curved and the dipstick is an original.
