Title: Question about gas tank on a 69.....
Post by: 77thor on April 18, 2009, 07:06:00 PM
I have tank out of car. I'm trying to dump out all the gas, but it won't all come out because of the baffles.

Does anybody know how the internal baffles are configured?
Are some attached to bottom and some attched to top of the tank?

BTW: I think it's an aftermarket tank.

if you have the tank out, then just remove the fuel pickup assembly from the top of the tank. there is a ring about 3 to 4 inches in diameter holding it in. you can either buy the special tool, or carefully with a blunt chisel, or better yet a piece of brass stock, tap the ring out by working around all three tabs to rotate it. after the ring is out, the pickup pulls out, and you can then use a siphon pump to remove the fuel safely. The reason i suggested a brass tool is because of sparks. Although rare, steel on steel will produce a spark, possibly igniting the fuel vapors. brass on steel will not spark.

good luck.
