Can someone recommend a good engine enamel that looks like the original? I started painting some of my external engine parts today and am not pleased with the color hue.....seems to be somewhat subdued....not bright enough as I want it to be. It is VHT Sp123....makes a good finish but It does not seem to be the right hue.

The best matching paint is by Martin Senour sold at most NAPA stores, but the bad is they no longer offer it in a rattle can. Their old part number for the rattle can is #7887, and their paint formulas for a spray gun are #90T 9954 or #99L 9954. Both are enamels, but the first one is acrylic enamel which most NAPA dealers can mix. The later is a synthetic enamel which very few dealers still stock. I have not found a suitable rattle can color available anywhere, but then again I haven't painted an engine with spray paint in years, it is all done with a spray gun.........................RatPack................

A lot of people with show cars around here use Bill Hirsch engine enamel
(800-828-2061) .... I don't know if they have a website. They are in NJ.

Many of the Corvette guys who don't have access to spray equipment prefer Quanta's Chevy Engine Orange; good color, and it's not as high-gloss as many of the other rattle-can paints (the original engine paint wasn't high-gloss).

RatPack....this looks like the paint you mentioned....just not from NAPA though.

Both me and my business, Camaro Hi-Performance have been using the Seymour, EN48 since the early 1990s. This color is right on the money and matches the two survivor engines in my collection. Most of the other paints are too thick and not quite right in color, and much of the casting patina goes away when you apply these other paints. The EN48 goes on nice, it's available in a rattle can and also shows off the actual casting patina when done.

Hey ....Thanks, Jerry....Was looking at the Seymour but had not seen any comments on it. Will sure keep it in mind. Now back to stripping and cleaning the paint off of the parts already painted. Oh well....one step forward and two back.....LOL.

I think Quatra is repackaging the Seymour paint and marketing under their name.......and selling it for more money. I think John and I had this discussion before and came up with the same conclusion.

Well I found the Seymour for a lot less than the Quanta.....bought 6 cans shipped to me for a total of $24.33. Thanks again guys for helping me out.

You can't go wrong. Many resto shops try to over engineer the painting of an engine and many of these hi-tech engine paints that require use of a spray guy is way over kill and most of the time, these paints are too thick, too glossy and do not look like a factory painted engine.

I realize I got in on this a little late, but a guy on TC told me he used some stuff called Aervoe. I found them and they shipped a case of 6 for $20.00 or so. I was really happy with it and the color is spot on.

Where do I find the Seymour, EN48 ?
I too wasnt very happy with the VHT.......seemed like it needed about 4 coats to look decent.

Like Jerry said above......it is not as thick and it shows the detail of the cast iron better.

Is the Seymour Spruce Chevy Orange 98-48 the same as the Seymour Chevy Orange EN-48 ?

Never used the Spruce but it looks like it is a lower grade version of the EN-48. At least that is what the Seymour web page states. And is cheaper than the EN-48.

Keep in mind that if you are really stuck and need a specific color in a spray can for touch ups etc, you can have it loaded in a spray can at a good paint shop. I do this at times to have something available for when I have a very small part to paint and don't wantto get the spray gun out.
