I think I know the answer to this but just to confirm, don't the cross member bolts have the threads up? Otherwise you could not move the cross member with the body on?

I am gonna say the bolts go up because thats the way mine is presently and I honestly believe (can't confirm) the crossmember has never been removed. In fact I even left it in place while I blasted/painted the frame. However I am missing one of the 4 bolts/nuts :(.

Yes! The bolts go up from the bottom. Threads on top.

Anyone know what these bolts are? Thread pitch, size, finish, headmark, washer size and finish? Thanks.

Here's a pic of an original. You can get a functional bolt w/built in washer at Ace Hardware. It won't have the head markings but will work just fine. I think it is a 3/8" x 16 x 1 1/2.

The bolts have a flanged head with the letter A and three lines.Also they take thick washers and locks on one side and only locks on the other.Very few four speed cars still have the correct bolts and washers. My original 07c 68z never had the cross member removed and this is what I found. John Allouez Restorations

AMK has lots of those A headed bolts and I'm sure they have these. If I have part #'s (which I can't find in the AIM) I could order from them as I'm putting together one already. That picture looks like the tansmisson mounting bolts. I'm looking for the crossmember ones that bolt it to the subframe. If some one knew what size and length they were I could match them up. I would probably need the size of the washers as well.

No, I knew you and John had it right, I was just referencing the picture and that it looked like the tranny bolts. I appreciate you getting me the link for HBC, but the reason I was trying to get the part # and use AMK was I'm getting eaten allive by shipping. I have an order to put in to AMK and to add a few bolts won't change shipping. I ordered some motor mounts and forgot the bolts. Bolts cost $4.00- shipping for two bolts-$9.50 and it's adding up real quick.

Hopefully, some day. If AMK is not correct, are the ones HBC sells correct, or does he get them from AMK?

Crossmember bolt kit from HBC doesn't have flanged heads and are TR headmarked.

Can't see the head markings but they are flanged bolts. Check link....

The bolts in the link do have the 3 lines, but like you said, can't see the head. I'll call and ask and report what I find.

Here is a pic of the orig. flanged bolt vs. the AMK TR replacement which is not correct in configuration as John mentioned.

Why would these bolts be any different than so many others on the car as far as having different manufacturers markings?

Because the flange was necessary to be able to get the bolt and nut started with a standard socket. The bolts go in from underneath up in to a deep recess. If you ever tried installing somthing like that without a shouldered bolt, then you know you have to stuff one or two (sometimes more depending on your socket) nuts in the socket to keep the bolt from going so far down that you can't get enough threads through the other side to get the nut started. They couldn't just use a longer bolt, or it would have interfered with the floor of the car after install.

Chevrolet used at least three different suppliers for every fastener, to avoid production interruptions, and they were stocked in the plants by PART NUMBER, so the same fastener could have three (or more) different headmarks, especially between Norwood and Van Nuys; nobody in the plants paid any attention to headmarks - only part numbers.

My point was showing an original bolt as discussed with what comes from AMK. Wrong configuration. I think the question might be for members to look at their cars and note what other shouldered bolt suppliers were used. Be good to know! Have seen the same bolt 'A' bolt on 69's as well. Do not recall anything else being used at this time but sure there has to be:)

I realize this topic is mainly '69 but for '67 the below picture shows a non-shoulder bolt taken from my survivor you may find of interest. This is on an L35/TH400 car.
It must have been fun installing these from the bottom up (unless they had shallow sockets) which llikely accounts for the type change in later years.
