Title: What is the last date code for 1968 Z/28 in December 1967?
Post by: Hot Rod Todd on January 26, 2009, 04:44:33 AM
My car has a 12D build date. Is there a 12E code for that month? Plus, who has the last Tuxedo black Z/28 in the registry? I believe mine is one of the last ones built, just curious. I read that Tuxedo black Z/28's stopped on January 1, 1968.

You'd think. :)
But there's a January built black Z out there. Surprised it didn't go thru as a special paint code.

Not many black 68 Z's.....

Last black Z28 that I looked at was an 03D car and that was listed as special order paint.  Canadian car with docs.  As I recall, there is something strange about code AA and code - - being used in the month of Dec.  I'll have to check my notes when I return home.

My 68 Z/28 is a 12E car, not black though. Just wanted to let you know that there were Z/28's made in the 5th week of December 1967.

Larry, would you post your trim tag?  I've never seen at 12E, which I presume your car is dated between the 26th and 29th.  I've got a 12D coupe.
I'd appreciate it!  ;D

Ok, now I have another question. I looked at the 1967 calendar: http://www.flicklives.com/Timeline/1967_cal.html (http://www.flicklives.com/Timeline/1967_cal.html) .
My car is a 12D build date. So what constitutes the 4th complete week. From what date to what date? December 1st was on a Friday, so was Dec 1-2 the range for 12A? Or would it be Dec 1-8 regardless of the day of the week? In other words, would my car be built between Dec 22-29, the actual week of Christmas?

Fisher defined the calendar however they wanted - the weeks varied.

A calendar is also on the site: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#Calendar

Thanks Larry!
So, using the VINs listed for Dec 67 by CRG, is it safe to assume that Larry's car was among the last cars of the last day of 1967?  Are there other cars in the data base that have a later VIN and are still 12E?

I don't know his VIN, so I can't answer that.
But remember that is a Fisher date, vs the VIN list which is believed to be after final assembly. The build date vs the end of month - sometimes they are the same, sometime ahead, sometimes after.  Fisher weeks were not consistent and that VIN list has it's own problems (even though it was from GM).

The last VIN that CRG has listed for December 1967 is 368090. My VIN is 78 numbers before that. I am courious to know how many Camaro's were produced in one day at the Norwood plant. But that still would not prove anything.

Norwood built 912 per day (57 per hour, two 8-hour shifts).

The last VIN that GM listed for December 1967 is 368090.

The data shows that month was 'accurate', and your car was one of the last built in 67.
Does it have the shoulder belts in it?

Thanks!
I haven't tried to determine when they actually implemented shoulder belts. It probably was a few days before the end of the year.

Todd, Phillip, Jim, et al,
Do these 12D and 12E cars that have been discussed above have shoulder belts?
I know John's 12D Z does not.

My 12D car does not have shoulder belts. It has deluxe interior but that probably has nothing to do with it.

I compared Larry's 12E VIN and body number to my 12D production to see how much difference there is. Our cars were probably made a week apart. Body number 67882-63239 = 4643 cars apart. VIN 368012-363362 = 4650 cars apart. 4650-4643 = 7 car discrepancy of body number vs VIN number. If you take 4650 divided by 759 cars per day our cars were produced around 6 days apart. I based the cars per day on 15192 for the month divided by 20 work days. If it were 912 per day they would be about 5 days apart.

Norwood built 912 per day, every day. The number of units per day (linespeed) never changed.

Ok, I must be missing something then. Dec 1967 shows 15192 cars for the month. If I look at May 1968 they made 39,952 cars. Please explain. Here is the link to the chart:

I guess I don't understand what your saying here. Are you saying that you have a 12E Camaro with shoulder belts? What does the 749 mean?

I think 749 is the interior code for black houndstooth.

Yes like Todd mentioned, I have a orig interior 68 car from LOS w/ cowl tag 12E equipped with the Deluxe Houndstooth Black buckets (Trim code 749) and it was built with shoulder belts.

I need to Call my friend Roger and see if his 12E LOS z28 he is reastoring has the shoulder belts  also.
