Title: Correct Air Cleaner and Valve Covers, L48??
Post by: BowtieSweden on January 03, 2009, 09:44:14 PM
Hi,
Is there anyone who knows, what kind of AirCleaner and Valve Covers, it should be in my -69 Camaro Conv. SS350/300hp - L48?
It's for a normal SS-hood, not Cowl-hood.
How does the Air Cleaner looks like?
And how is the ValveCovers, painted or chromed?

I have posted this in ChevyTalk-forum, but with no answer ???.
Hopefully there is someone out there who knows.

Thanks,

I have a completely stock untouched 1969 X55 convertible SS 350/300 HP L48 SS hood and it has the stock valve covers painted chevy orange and the air cleaner is a single snorkel angled to the left and it has a heat riser attached also. My air cleaner has a chrome top with a 350/300 HP sticker on it and my valve cover on the left has a tonawanda sticker on it because it was built back in New York and the motor # starts with a T .  Hope this helps.-John

Hi and thanks for quick reply.

My car is exactly the same model as yours, x55 and a T at the beginning of the number, Dusk Blue with white top.

I was pretty sure that it would be as you describe, but some argued that it would be all chromed details.

Do you know where I can get this, new, aftermarket or original?
And you can please, send a couple of pictures of each part, it will make the job easier?

Thanks again

Thanks again.

One more question about this,
do you know what Bright Engine Chrome means?
It is mentioned in the RPO Z27 SS package.

Then what is this for? The h. riser in my pic has a different orientation and size. Although the decal reads 427 that means nothing to me.

I don't know - someone who's more familiar with the L48 than I am will have to answer that; I found those photos over on Team Camaro some time ago.

That's the correct air cleaner. That's the Bright Engine Chrome - the lid.

There was no "bright accent option". No such RPO. :)

Thanks KurtS.

It was what I suspected, with or without chromed lid.
Do you know where to find one?

My L48 SS X11 has the chrome lid
I was thinking there was a difference between the X55 and the X11, but Gus confirmed that both had the chrome lid

Hi again guys.
I forced a friend to look for aircleaners at Pomona recently.
What do you think, does it look like it is a correct aircleaner for L48?
I think it looks to be right, just repaint and rechrome the lid, then it will be good.

Hey Gus, These pics are hard to see any type of detail. The pics posted by the other members are nice and sharp and one could get a better view to help answer your questions with a certain degree of correctness. These pics are a bit far away and dark. Sorry I can't give you a more positive answer.

GUS,

Just to state the obvious...that is an automatic air cleaner.  My 69 L48/SS 4sp also has a chrome lid.

Thanks Guys,

69houdini:
Sorry for the quality on the pics.
What details are you interested in, to determine if it is right?
Or was it only small and dark pics?
If so, I will take better new pics as soon as possible.

MRPENNYPKR:
So you claim, that normally is the black lid on automatic and the chromed lid on 4-speed/manual cars?
Or is it other differences, too?
My plan is, if not, just to rechrome this black lid.

If you click on each photo, it'll take you to Photobucket with a much larger image, then click on "full size" at the upper left of the photo and you'll get them much larger. The images in the post are just thumbnails to get you to Photobucket. :)

Hey Gus, Pics are good I followed John's advice. This looks to me to be correct. There is no difference between the air cleaner whether or not it is for an automatic or a stickshift the chrome option was available for both. I think you're on the right track.
Title: Re: Correct Air Cleaner and Valve Covers, L48??
Post by: MRPENNYPKR on January 31, 2009, 02:17:07 AM
Just a little clarification.  The air cleaner is an automatic since it has a valve in the snorkel.  Manual trans does not have the pre-heating tube from the exhaust manifold to the snorkel.  I believe all '69 L48/SS models (with standard hood) have the crome lid.

Hi Gus and Mrpennypkr,

As Kurt also reported the chrome option was only the air cleaner lid. PERIOD. Not every L48/SS w/SS hood whether it is an automatic or a stick shift came with a chrome optioned lid. Key word here is OPTION. I was only referring to the chrome option package that was an option, just to be clear not every SS chose that Chrome Lid Option there are many black lidded SS L48 air cleaner lids out there.

What the ...
I thought I had solved this.
The problem with the lid is perfectly clear, but
I have not yet seen a picture of a aircleaner from a 4speed car, all images have been with the valve.

MRPENNYPKR, can you post a picture from your car?
Is it totally clear that the valve on the snorkel is the only difference between 4speed and auto?

Gus,

I can't believe that I don't have a picture of my air cleaner.
My car is in the process of a frame off restoration (I just put the Instrument panel in yesterday).  I have not done anything to the air cleaner yet.

I'll take a picture tomorrow and post it.

Thanks Tony.

Then you and I have pretty much the same status of our restoration, but I have limited myself to only the frontend.
Otherwise, it will take too long.
Then, after that, I will decide what to do with rest of the car.

I'll be grateful if you take any pictures of your cleaner, but also on your valve covers, if they are original steel covers.

Thanks
GUS

Gus,  Here are the valve covers before restoration.  They are original.  Also, my air cleaner.  Note that there is no valve (therefore manual transmission).  I believe that this is an original SS L48 Manual transmission air cleaner.  It came with my car, however I was not the first owner.  I have the original dealer buyers order (the list of options and prices when the Camaor was ordered for the customer by the dealer.)  It lists the SS option but no other chrome or "style" options.

I hope the pics look ok...my first post.  If you want any more or better pics, email me at the address on my profile I will be happy to send more.

Was it a x55 L48 4-speed?
Looking forward to the pictures.

Year One has the single snorkel air cleaner assembly for 67's.
Kurt is there much difference for the Rochester 4b in 69?
If you were state side I'd say find a decent pick yard and go hunting.

BowtieSweden,

The GM part number for the air cleaner assembly is 6484584 (69 Camaro & Chevy II w/350 4BC w/A.T.) as per my 1969 Corvair-Chevy II-Chevelle-Camaro Parts Catalog (Oct. 1968). The M.T. air cleaner is part number 6484583 for the same model. If you find one at a swap meet there should be a white sticker on the side of the base with the part number but most of the time this sticker is long gone. I have 3 original 1970 Camaro SS350 air cleaner assemblies (GM # 6485242) as well as an original 6485240 air cleaner (1970 Chevelle w/350 4BC), all have the white stickers with the part number.
Good luck searching.
