Title: 1968 Z28 Water Pump Studs
Post by: 1968 Z28 on December 18, 2008, 06:45:08 PM
I have a good RH water pump stud but I don't have a LH stud.  My alternator bracket is just bolted to the water pump with a bolt and the bracket appears to be spaced to far in toward the block when you look at the adjust bolt connection at the top of the alternator...the outside bracket kicks out at the end of the two brackets.  It appears that there should be a stud there instead of a bolt.  Does anyone have a good number for the correct stud that would fit there?  I can't seem to find any part number in any of the books and manuals that I have.  Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Sonet

Coy.....I called the Aztec Chevrolet and he said that they didn't show any but I called my local Chevy dealer and he said the he found a package of 5 in Denver, Colorado.  Does your parts locater show that same info?  BTW....thanks a bunch for putting me onto the number,

Aztec chev shows 3 of the 3776391, sometimes the lazy guys don't want to check the bin. They are the only dealer that shows them. Make sure you read the part# closely.

Coy....I went ahead and bought the 5 of the #336793 in Denver.  I called Aztec Chevrolet back and had him recheck and he said that they still didn't show that they have the studs.  He did say that they were in the middle of a complete parts re-inventory and call back in about a week and maybe they would show up.  Oh well!
Thanks again,

I gave you two part numbers, one is 5/16-18x3/8-16 which is part#3776391. the other is 3/8-16x3/8-16 and the part number is 336793. The one that Aztec shows is 3776391. Confusing, I know.

Coy...yeah I figured it out....thought I would go ahead and get those other ones in Denver and try to make them work, if I can't find the original studs.  If the original ones show up at Aztec Chevrolet then I will try to sell those from Denver on eBay.  Just trying to find something better than the bolt.  Thanks again,

I think I got a bolt "kit" from Rick's a few years ago and it had the stud.

I think I got a bolt "kit" from Rick's a few years ago and it had the stud.
Was the stud in the kit the RH one or the LH one?  The upper RH stud is the long one that bolts the water pump, spacer, and smog pump bracket to the block with the inside of the stud and bolts the negative battery cable on the outside of the stud.  The upper LH stud is a shorter stud that bolts the water pump to the block with the inside of the stud and bolts the front alternator bracket to the outside of the stud.  All of the water pump bolt kits I have seen have only one stud and it's the longer one.  What I have been looking for is a kit that has both studs included but have not seen one as of yet.  Mainly I need the shorter LH one but would like to have the whole kit with both studs.

Thanks for the info,
Sonet

There is a Paragon bolt that will work here and is just about right on the money,

Thanks Jerry......Yes I have looked at Paragon and noticed that stud but couldn't tell for sure if it would be right.  The specs on the studs given to me by Cory in one of the above post seem to be about right and I have ordered 5 from Denver Colorado but they won't be here till next week.  If either of the studs that Cory mentioned don't work out then I will take your advice and get the one from Paragon.  BTW....thanks for cluing me in on Paragon...I had written you an E-Mail recently asking about some other item and you told me to look at Paragon and I have been checking them out fairly frequently since.

Thanks again,

Well....I finally found a LH water pump stud that seems to be the right measurements from AMK, Inc. and order it.   It is a:
          3/8" - 16 x 1.44" inner by 3/8" - 16 x .94" outer, phosphate coated.  (AMK # B-11044, similar to GM #3928906"  I have received the stud and it looks great.
