Title: '67 center console
Post by: heckler on October 27, 2008, 02:15:50 AM
Has anyone had any experience restoring the center console in a '67 Camaro?  Chrome plating is flaking off and black paint is flaking off also.  Chrome paint doesn't look chrome and I'm very frustrated with a price of $350 for a whole console....and I only need the chrome framing to it.

Any ideas?

I think the process of restoring the console with paint would be complicated. The chrome would have to be thoroughly sanded, etched, filled, primed, chromium paint and then cleared. If done correctly the results looks good but there is no substitute for chrome. The black is easy, thoroughly sand, etch, prime and spray black.
You could search EBay and swap meets for a console that is in better shape than yours but a really good console would cost more than 350.00.

Call Advance plating (or any of the really good chrome shops) and inquire if and how much ( hold onto your hat). This would only be done if you needed an original console or you have a fat wallet.

If you do not absolutely need an original and looks are important then the 350.00, even it is a little expensive, is the best alternative. You can try to sell your console at a swap meet or EBay and re-coupe some of your money.
This is my opinion, and what I will do with the 67 I am restoring.

Never EVER Sand Textured Plastic!
Never Sand Textured metal!

Clean Textured plastic with oven cleaner.  It removes paint that someone else added, grease/grime, & crap.  It also gets rid of all the faux in the "container".
Clean textured metal with Jet Paint Remover and Scotch Brite Pads/Brass Brush.

Guys have said Rustoleum 7777 for years on here.
It is a good match.
