Title: 69 Z Clutch Fan
Post by: jdv69z on October 23, 2008, 08:25:34 PM
Was there a sheet metal piece covering part of the clutch on these fans? Mine looks similar to the picture of the Eaton type clutch shown in the CRG report, but I have an inner circle of fins visible on mine, like mine cover piece is missing? My outer circle of fins looks identical.

never seen one of these. Is there a part number or date code on the flange?

That is a late model part - early 90's

Do you mean part is from the 1990 or later?

Typically I see that clutch on cars built in the 90's.
Bet if you went into the dealer for a new clutch- that is what you would get.

Could be the case... It's been on my car since at least 1982, so if it's a replacement, it's been in use for a while. Part no. / date stamp on flange where it's bolt to water pump? On front or back?

So I am off by 10 years.  ::)
I always see that clutch on a lot of the late model cars.

It was a factory part-- not sure about the date - I never saved any of those.

That's a Delco clutch - rarely seen on 1st-gen cars; most used Eaton or Schwitzer clutches, and the Schwitzer clutches are dated on the O.D. of the flange where they bolt to the water pump.

Is it possible that it is the original, or is it a replacement? 90% of everything else on the car is original, so I never really thought about it being non original until I saw the pics of the others in the CRG report, and noticed it looked different. Can I see date on flange w/o removing it?

How many blade rivets? - looks like the fan is replaced also - got a better picture?

Some of the clutches were dated under the water pump - on the back.
Have seen Delco clutches used in the 60's - usually on Olds and Caddy - but not that face design - That is absolutely a replacement

You're right, fan is different. 3 rivets holding blade. Here's a pic of #'s on blade also.

Thanks for the help; Interestingly, water pump and radiator are original. Wonder what would cause replacement of this, especially the fan itself?

JDV,

Thanks for info on the one for sale. Since my car is Oct '68 build, the one for sale isn't technically any more correct than the one I have. I'll keep what I've got. It's not a show car anyway.
