Title: EARLY 69 NORWOOD ALTERNATE VIN
Post by: McKenzieDave on February 20, 2006, 10:02:00 PM
FROM YOUR RESEARCH TOPICS:

Engine Partial VIN stamping:
Some Van Nuys-built (LOS/VN) cars had the VIN stamped on the pad of the block and some had the VIN stamped down by the oil filter. Sometime in October of 1968, we believe the stamp was moved to the oil filter, but by sometime around February of 1969 we believe the stamp moved back up to the pad.
On Norwood cars, we believe the change to the stamping location did not occur until sometime around December 1968, and then did not move again.

We want to verify these general statements, and pinpoint more exactly when these changes occurred.

I HAVE A CAMARO VIN 124379N500304, BUILD DATE 8D.  OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A VERY EARLY 69 WITH 2BBL 327.  THE ALTERNATE VIN IS STAMPED UNDER THE OIL FILTER BOSS ON SIDE OF BLOCK IN ROUGH CAST AREA.  I HAVE MANY PHOTOS OF BLOCK, NUMBERS, ETC.  ALSO ENGINE CAST DATE IS M-8, EXPLAIN THAT.  I CAN SUPPORT ANY ADDITIONAL RESEARCH THAT YOU MAY WANT TO FOLLOW UP ON.

Can you post or email the trim tag data and engine code?

As I look through the data, I do see some other real early NOR cars with the VIN by the oil filter.

The engine that I put in my car (VIN#;124379N581767) was originally in a base 69 coupe, VIN# 124379N551248.

Both the partial VIN as well as the engine build date/code were stamped on the pad on the block in front of the RH cylinder head.  The particulars on this engine are:

CASTING NUMBER:   3932386
CASTING DATE:   J 31 8 (OCTOBER 31, 1968)
CASTING CLOCK:   8-9 AM, DAY SHIFT
ENGINE CODE:   V1122FJ (Flint Engine, Nov 22 assy date, 327 cid/210 Hp w/3 spd manual

This engine was clearly manufactured after the one in the pics.  I can send a photo of the pad if that would be helpful.

Nothing was/is stamped in the area of the oil filter that I could see - wouldn't have expected to see anything since the engine code was stamped on the block pad.  Looks like there was some definite inconsistencies in the way Norwood stamped these blocks.

Any possibility of the day and night shifts stamping the partial VIN's in different locations?  Have we seen the same thing for 350 engines as well?

I'm pretty sure the M8 is not a cast date, it was for something else. It was the wrong size and was missing the day code.

Kurt--The cast size is typical of normal casting dates.  There is a single number 3 on the left side upper to the right of the casting clock, any relevance?  I can't believe this block doesn't have a cast date.  Dave
