Title: Automatic Trans dating ...
Post by: no69x-44 on August 26, 2008, 02:42:43 AM
How far back did the dates of the transmissions go from the build dates on the 1st gens - 1969 in particular?  Did it matter if it was a th350, th400 or a power glide?  I'm guess that Chevy had tranys pre-built and ready ahead of the cars being built ... But how far ahead were the tranys from the car assembly dates?

Only data point I can offer is that the 'glide in my '69RS was built on 16 Jan 1969 on the night shift iin Cleveland, OH  Attached pic is the date code on the pan.  My RS is an 01C build and based on the VIN # went through final assembly on or around Monday, 20 January 1969.

My 67 glide pan code is within a few days of the trim tag build also. It was built on the night shift too, so that should tell you something about the volume of transmissions going out the factory door...I don't think they had time to stock ahead on the Powerglides.

Would it be correct to assume that "speciality transmissions" like the M22 and CX coded THM400 would
more likely to have been pre-built and waiting for call to assembly?  Any owners of such originally equipped
cars have build date vs. transmission assembly date information?

Nuch

I have a small db of CX and M22 dates. With an exception or two they are within 2-6 weeks of the body tag date.
