Title: Ignition Coil Condensor.......... attaching screw
Post by: Lane 68 on July 12, 2008, 02:26:27 PM
What size and head marking was an original coil condensor attaching screw you use to attach the condensor to the coil bracket on a 68 Camaro?  Mine looks "bubba" >:(

Lane -

Here's a few photos of one on Ebay now...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360070156305&_trksid=e11010.m204&_trkparms=algo%3DSI%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D8&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:MOTORS:1123

I took a look at the one on my '68 Z/28 and there are no head markings on the bolt.  Also, there is a small, star type lock washer between the coil bracket and the capacitor bracket on mine.  The one on Ebay doesn't have this lock washer.

1/4" hex head - with no marking.
A star washer in this location is not typical

Paul,
According to the AIM, there should be a star washer in the attachment.  You have answered my question about the head marking...... Thanks!!  I believe yours is correct according to the AIM.

Lane, it is in the AIM? I could swear John Z said one time the coil/bracket came as an assembly. I looked in the '69 AIM and it refers to the 5/16" bolt that holds the bracket to the intake.

I have seen the star washer - but it is rare to have one.
Coils are something I have collected for years - I have a TON of coils.
I started selling the condensers last year, when they became so valuable.

A few months back someone asked me to include the star washer with their purchase.
I looked through 50 or so coils, and could not find one for him? - finally concluded it was not typical to have a star washer at that location.

Now i can go back and do another survey - But I am pretty darn sure of what I will find.
I believe I still have 400 or so original Delco coils here.

The coil and its mounting bracket were received as an assembly from Delco, but the radio noise suppression capacitor was added at the car assembly plant if the car had a radio.

Two questions::  Is it a condenser or a capacitor that is attached to the coil bracket???
Is it a 5/16ths bolt or a "screw" as in the last post from Lane going to Gary???  Mebbe I have a "Bubba" in that I have a Phillips screw being used as the attachment unit and no washer under the screw... Not trying to be "picky"  but .....   T.

The flat head screw is not uncommon. Not phillips.
Seen a BUNCH of original -- Yes - capacitors attached with a regular slotted screw.
Might be a different year thing though - never took notice.
I went through a lot of coils again - NO STAR WASHERS.

No difference. It is a capacitor. Condenser is a term used to desribe the function of the capacitor.
