In your book, it mentions that "only SS models without the rally sport package received a factory installed black grille", without mention of black SS cars.

The CRG chart says all black cars received a silver grille, which would include open headlight SS cars.

I'm asking simply because I don't know since I don't recall having seen an original, unrestored black SS car (RS or not).

Dave,

I have more on this on page 158.  Black SS cars without rally sport received a black grille......not silver.  Only the black RS-SS cars got the silver grille.

Sorry have to disagree. All black '69s had a silver [aka argent] grille.

Back in '69 High-Performance Cars magazine ordered an automatic L78 Camaro SS as a project car for the magazine. The wanted all black, no D90 stripe and Chevy refused to build it. They took it with stripes and eventually removed them. There are a number of photos of this car with and without D90; Motion Performance used it in their ads. The car was not an RS and has the standard silver grille with SS badge.

Bill,

One in my neighborhood bought new with a black grille.  Went to school with this guy, SS396-325 non RS car.

1969 ordering info also states black cars will have an argent grille. There were many pictures of the HP Cars '69; Motion used it for their catalog. I know of others.

I have paperwork for a Daytona yellow COPO with yellow houndstooth. The dealer added Z/28 stripes to the car prior to delivery; it is listed on the invoice. The car still exists with original paint. Dealers did plenty of that sort of thing to sell cars in those days.

Yeah, I shouldve worded my query better which is about the discrepancy between the book and the CRG table in regards to Black std. SS grille color.  Appears there is a difference of opinion, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Picture of my 10 10 X66 car with the original owner, you can make out 1970 Ohio plates on the car. The car is a 05A car so I think it had to be fairly new yet.
FYI (for your inspection ) silver grill. Also car appear's to have been built with chrome rings on the headlight buckets.  :o When looking at the original photo there seems to be a sparkle coming of the the headlight rings. Oh my, if that is the case, I have a faulty car !!

Ahhh, the black/red D90 car. Early cars got a white D90 like the HP Cars '69.

When it comes to Camaro discussions of this nature I no longer trust what people remember. Dealers messed with cars in those days and one of the best examples is the #55 ZL-1 that was just sold. The selling dealer added stripes and 427 emblems; all still there with the original paint. Back in '70 340 Challengers and 'cudas were hot and hard to get so the ugly green Challenger a friend had as a demo got repainted black-when new. Vinyl tops were dyed or removed; wheels/tires swapped, whatever it took to sell them was done.
