Title: Headers
Post by: Franko on June 10, 2008, 12:06:26 PM
I am going to list this question again about which ceramic headers would fit my 1968 Camaro the best because I am hoping that there would be many Camaro owners that have had good results installing headers on their small blocks. Wouldn't the results be the same for 67 - 69 Camaros?

Hooker Super Comp sounds like they must be dimpled at the streering box. I do not know if this is representative or not. Here is my original question:

Can anybody please tell me exactly which headers fit a 1968 Camaro, 350 without any issues. I've seen some headers dented in to fit around the steering box. Another person told me he had get a special small oil filter with his set of headers. I am hoping you folks have some experience with a headers that fit perfectly.

Thank you

It would help if you'd give some info on what kind of engine you have, Franko. If it's not a high-winding hotrod, 1-5/8" headers are fine. I've never had any problem with any 1-5/8" headers I've used on a Camaro. I've run a lot of brands over the years. It's when you get into the bigger tubes that you run into problems. I can tell you that 1-5/8" Cyclone and Hedman will fit with no problems or surprises because I've run them both. Hope this helps.

I'm using Hooker Comps in my 69 350.  And yes they needed a little self-clearancing.  ;D

Thorley Tri-Ys. Tons of room w/manual steering and fit good with power steering.

At the steering arm nut, Tex? That's where mine hit. I also have to run a short filter. How about you?

I have ceramic coated Flowtech headers on my 67 350 and they fit just fine, close to the undercarriage so there are no issues with dragging.

I want to put a set of Thorley Tri-Ys on my 69 Z28 (302) with manual steering - anyone have the right part number? Their web site was vague on the correct application for the 302 (unless it's the same for all small blocks).  Thanks

The other question is whether your 68 comes with Factory A/C.  That's another constraint on which header to go with.

my thoughts exactly.

At the risk of hi-jacking this thread, I have a 67 ss350 with factory air, power sreering and power brakes. Any one have any suggestions on headers that will fit with out melting the a/c box? Some one also suggested using a set of "rams horn " manifolds instead of headers but i don't know if they will clear the subframe and flow well enough. My 350 is running a slightly aggressive cam with rhoads lifters to tame the cam lope. heads and intake ported and polished.

thanx. paul.

paul,

I have the same set up on my car and went with the Heddman Husler Headers.  The A/C side was not a problem as it fits great.  I ran into a fit problem on the steering side.  I ended up having to reroute the front tube (cut and paste) in order to make it work.  I also need to let you know that I went ahead with a power rack and piniion system from Flaming river.  I would've had to do the same or at least bang on the header to make it fit a non-rack system to get it around the steering box.

My 68 Camaro is a stock 350 which I installed a new top end on. This includes World S/R Torquer heads (which are advertised as replacements for factory heads). It has power steering but no air conditioning. This is a daily driver which I would like to take a few passes at the strip just to see what it will turn. Has anybody else had success with Doug Thorley Headers (376Y1C)? They state silver ceramic. Is this the normal ceramic coating? Thanks.

Matte Black Jet Hot Coated Hooker Super Comps... they fit great, no issues at all. BUT the car is a no power steering Z28... Really are nice headers and matte black coated is very unobtrusive in the engine compartment.

I have a [69] Z28 w/out PS too.  The headers are the only thing that is not original, so I kinda like the idea of the matt black.  Do you have any pics that you can post?

I'm still unsure of which headers I like.  I currently have Hookers, but they are old, one of the pipes is loose, and the driver's side hangs lower.  I looked at the Thorley Tri-Y's but I don't think I like the way they look. Besides, what is the advantage? I have a 69 Z (non- p.s.), and everthing under the hood looks original except for the headers.  Let's keep the topic going, and if you guys have pictures with the same application please post them.

FirstGenAddict -

In your photo,

Where is the white-striped vacuum hose from the choke pull-off diaphragm going - is it connected to something? Can't tell from the photo.

Did he tee it off to follow your vacuum advance advice?  Scott

My vacuum hose comes off the dist into a metal tube then back into the white striped hose and then into the carb.

I don't think so - the only manifold vacuum source on a 4053 (other than the large PCV port) is a nipple at the front of the baseplate (which is where the hose from the choke pull-off diaphragm was connected on a stock setup), but I don't see anything at the front of the baseplate.

John,
It and the distributor are T'd to the baseplate under the front fuel bowl.  The T is not really a T it has 2 legs off of the same side and the hose that goes to the baseplate is hidden as it is running parallel to the hose going to the dashpot.

If you see in the picture, the 480 is not even in the car, there is an old cast iron distributor that I welded a stud to the shaft in order to spin oil pumps to prime the engine.

OK, thanks - couldn't see the hose routing in the photo.
