Title: 68 RS/SS Camaro 396?
Post by: dynomac on June 01, 2008, 01:19:06 PM
Hey Guys, I'm a newbie. Just purchased a Corvette Copper 68 RS/SS 396 4SPD. The engine is missing, is there anyway to tell which 396 was in the car originally? It is a nontach car.  Would the information on the trans. give me any leads? Thanks, Keith

Not really, 68's are the hardest to ID.

Hi Keith and welcome to CRG.  Do you know if the car was originally equipped with an air conditioner?

Hey Steve, Thanks! My car was a non air car. It also had power drum brakes. A friend told me to check the fuel line. He said the 375HP cars had a 3/8 fuel line? Thanks, Keith

Trans is about the only hint.
http://www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml lists all the differences.

All had a 3/8 fuel line.

Keith

Well since it didn't come with AC then no way to tell.  I thought that if it did have AC then you would know that it was not the 375 hp version.  Did it come with cruise (same logic)?

Post a DETAILED picture of the Fuel line termination and retension (Clips style and location) in the saddle of the subframe.
If it is untouched (Hacked) it provides a BB specific clue,,,one of many
Above link is great.
